After getting schooled against Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart, the stats for Raducanu make grim reading as the slick indoor clay did her no favours against the relentless pressure from Ostapenko.

Tomova arrives with an ITF title under her belt already as well as a couple of matches in the fizzing atmosphere of Madrid where the balls will fly a lot faster.

Playing Styles & Prediction

It has been another tough start to the year for Emma Raducanu, and her terseness in a pre-tournament press conference where her monosyllabic answers enraged the press, just shows the pressure the tour puts players under. She remained tight-lipped about the wrist issues she has been facing and gave very little away in around 3 minutes.

Stuttgart clay is slick and fast and at times Raducanu looked step-slow against Ostapenko, who took control from the start of the match and never looked like relinquishing it.

The Brit will now face a lucky loser, who has a lot of clay under her feet and a lot more match play in general this year. Madrid is at altitude and the ball fairly fizzes through the air. For an aggressive player who likes to take the ball early, she will need to be a lot more adept at sliding into position and although she does have weapons, her lack of match sharpness, especially on clay leaves her vulnerable. Tomova is known for her speed and agility around the court and has been consistent on all courts, seeing her ranking rise over the past two years.

Prediction: Tomova in three sets
