In what is to all intents and purposes a mini-Slam, British No. 1 Johanna Konta will have been happy to have eased past France’s Pauline Parmentier in relatively easy fashion. We have quickly become accustomed to Konta getting off to a fast start, but it was the Frenchwoman putting the Brit under early pressure, albeit unable to convert on two break point chances. It was a let off that served Konta well as she broke Parmentier in the final two games of the set to take the lead.

Parmentier started aggressively in the second set, breaking Konta immediately, but the Brit regained control of the match breaking Parmentier twice in succession. The Frenchwoman had her chance a couple more times to get another break back but could not quite get over the line. She made Konta earn the match, though, but frustratingly for Parmentier, she let four break points chances go with Konta getting the job done on her third match point.

Konta takes on Hsieh Su-Wei as she bids to reach the third round of the BNP Paribas Open for just the second time. A win like that over Parmentier will give her a boost, and she will need it against the tricky Hsieh.

Hsieh has claimed some top scalps recently, ploughing through Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova in Dubai most recently, before falling to Petra Kvitova. Her unconventional style of play can upend even the most accomplished of players – double handed hitting, flat om both sides with crazy angles – it will get under the skin of players and Konta will need to keep an even keel and hope for a good serving day, as most aspects of her game come together when her serve is firing well.

With the blustery conditions this year at Indian Wells, it will be quite a challenge for the Brit to keep control of the match.

Prediction: Konta in three sets.

Konta and Hsieh are scheduled on Stadium 7, not before 12:30pm (8:30pm GMT)
