Heather Watson [Q] v Jil Teichmann | First meeting
Heather Watson returns to a previously happy place in Hobart, for a pre-Australian Open tune-up. Although she has won the tournament in the past and reached the quarter-final and the semi-final, she went out in the first round last year, and was narrowly beaten in the second round of the Brisbane at the season opener.
A stalwart of British Fed Cup campaigns, Watson finished a tough year with a run to the Tianjin final, and in Jil Teichmann she faces a player who cut her teeth more on clay with titles last year in Prague and Palermo to her name.
Teichmann had a patchy year off the terre battue in 2019 which ought to give Watson a little bit of hope that she might be able to turn out a win, and with a couple of matches already under her belt in Hobart, she is more than capable of springing the surprise over the higher ranked player.
Watson has also been on a tough run of results herself and she is in real need of recapturing the form she found at the end of last year. She has the skills certainly across hard courts to play attacking tennis, but can turn her hand to solid defence, and when she is on form she can make things very sticky for opponents.
However, anticipate her going the long way round, in the early hours of a British morning.
Prediction: Watson in three sets.
