Johanna Konta v Barbora Strycova | Strycova leads H2H 2-0
Perhaps remembered more for the press conference after the loss than the manner of the defeat itself, it was a frustrating second half of the year for British No. 1 Johanna Konta, who had to close out her season early with a niggling injury.
She has not played competitively since reaching the quarter-final of the US Open, but really should be expected to make a confident start on the hard courts, especially Down Under.
She will be bidding to go better than her previous longest run here to the quarter-finals in 2018, but she had an earlier than expected exit last year. However, she will need to pick up her first win against feisty Czech Barbora Strycova whose variety and indeed unpredictability has had the measure of Konta so far.
Both play aggressively and in general Konta has a more level head than Strycova, at times, but the Czech strives on being the underdog and frustrating the living hell out of higher ranked players. Konta’s capitulation at the end of the Wimbledon quarter-final was very much against the grain of their previous sets, which have always been close and perhaps the pressure of the occasion got to Konta, against a very capable grass court player in Strycova.
The hard courts might actually be a bit more of a leveller but Konta will want to get her first win under her belt against Strycova in some style. She will need to start as aggressively as we have seen and push to close it out in straight sets.
Prediction: Konta in two sets.
