Francesca Jones def Laura Pigossi [6] 6-2 6-1

It was another straight sets victory for Britain’s Francesca Jones, who took on last year’s finalist Laura Pigossi, as she eased past the No. 6 seed.

As always, Jones, tenacity when broken before the first changeover came to the fore, with an immediate break back. Pigossi was also able to dish out the tit-for-tat as Jones broke for a lead, only to find herself swiftly pegged back, leaving it to Jones to break once more for the first set.

It looked like the second set was going to be a carbon copy of the first with Jones breaking back from losing her serve early, and in quick succession. This time Pigossi has no immediate replay, as Jones broke once more for the match.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Jones has been building up her momentum on the clay, and it has shown in both her confidence against her opponents, and also in her stats, but she will be facing someone with a lot of experience. It has not been a great year for Maria – at least until she got back onto the clay, although she did win ITF Pune on a hard court earlier in the year.

Both have sailed through to this point in straight sets, and for Jones there is absolutely nothing to lose, and the gains have already been massive in terms of the prospective ranking jump.

Prediction: Maria in three sets.
