Francesca Jones def Carol Zhao 6-2 6-1

It was a dominant display from Francesca Jones against a slightly undercooked Carol Zhao. The Canadian has not had a great run of form, and that trend continued despite a spirited start with an immediate break of the Jones serve.

Jones broke back and took the advantage after a flurry of breaks before breaking once more for the set.

The second set was one way traffic for the Brit who swiftly jumped out to a 0-4 lead. Although Zhou broke to stop the rot, it was too high a mountain to climb as Jones steamed into the quarter-finals.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Last year’s finalist Laura Pigossi came through qualifying. And not surprisingly spent most of her time on the clay. There has been a smattering of hard-court action for Pigossi but she has picked up a clay semi-final and quarter-final this year, so there is no doubt she is far happier on the dirt.

That being said, Jones has really put in the time on the clay, albeit mainly at an ITF level) but outside of her return stats, her tenacity means that she will scrap for breaks or, as we saw n round two, is unfazed by being broken, and is typically business-like in come right back at her opponent.

This could be a sterner test though.

Prediction: Pigossi in three sets.
