Harriet Dart [WC] v Yulia Putintseva | First meeting
After the possibly most random pairing of Britain’s Harriet Dart with Venus Williams on the American’s debut in Birmingham, Dart comes out against Yulia Putintseva in a bid to make the second round at the Nature Valley Classic with Johanna Konta.
She can certainly catch more experienced players napping with rapid fire groundstrokes of depth, force and precision, and having taken a short injury break with a knee injury, withdrawing from both Roland Garros, she looked to be back to her battling form in Nottingham.
Having struggled to get out of qualifying in previous appearances at Birmingham, it will be interesting to see what she can make with the opportunity of a main-draw wild-card. She has, at least, got her grass feet under her – Putintseva had to withdraw from Nottingham will illness it is probably fair to say grass is not her strongest surface.
Putintseva, for all her feistiness can play a patient game but the crowd could well get to her if they are particularly vocal for the young Brit.
Prediction: Dart in three sets.
