Both Katie Boulter and Taylor Townsend have enjoyed some time off since the US Open, where neither got particularly far, but Townsend does have the benefit of match play on these courts in Beijing.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Boulter’s success in the San Diego final, winning the highest-level final to date in her career has set her up for the year, but the autumn hard court swing has been less good for her. Townsend, however, has had a better hard court run reaching the quarter-final of Toronto and the fourth round in Cincinnati, having come through qualifying in both.

Townsend has gained a little more success in recent years for her doubles’ prowess, winning the title with Katerina Siniakova in Wimbledon and with the same pairing reaching the semi-finals at the US Open, so her use of the court, and ability to throw in a lot of variety will be a stern test for Boulter.

The Brit has been on the receiving end of a couple of heart-breaking losses especially at the Slams and could really do with a confidence booster. She has worked a lot on her game and is becoming a much more complete player – but there is still work to do.

Prediction: Boulter in three sets.
