LONDON, ENGLAND – Sonay Kartal equals last year’s standout run to the third round where she will face French qualifier Parry.

Sonay Kartal had maybe been expecting to face two-time finalist Ons Jabeur, but her retirement set her up against Viktoriya Tomova, and a straight-forward advance into the third round. The Bulgarian started well enough, matching up well to Kartal for the first four games.
The British No. 3 stepped up the pressure to break twice in a row to wrap up the first set. Kartal carried that momentum into the start of the second, as she reeled off eight games in a row before Tomova stopped the rot with a break of her own.
Tomova consolidated her break, but that would be the end of her flurry of resistance as Kartal broke to win the match in a little over an hour, in contrast to her battle with Jelena Ostapenko.

Parry brings to the court a rare stylish single handed backhand, to complement a strong forehand and good court coverage. She couples that with an aggressive baseline play and she will not give up on the court.
Kartal plays a similar game from the baseline and will try and throw Parry off course with her variety as well as mixing up attack and defence. While Parry has more experience on the tour, Kartal’s star has been on the rise, but when she goes off the boil, she can find matches running away from her quickly.
