Yuriko Lily Miyazaki is into the second round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career after the British wildcard thrashed Tamara Korpatsch with the loss of three games. It was Miyazaki’s second Grand Slam main draw win of her career after her success at the US Open late last year. Speaking after the match Miyazaki believes she can thrive on grass and ranks this win as one of the best ones of her career so far.
“I’d say definitely one of the higher ones ’cause, I mean, I haven’t played at the main draw of Grand Slams often,” Miyazaki explained in her press conference.
“This is my third time. So yeah, I think it’s one of my best wins of my career. Obviously she’s a top-hundred player. Yeah, I’m pleased with it. I really enjoy playing in these conditions. Yeah, with the crowds, things like that, I think it really gets me going. Yeah, I think here especially at Wimbledon, the courts are absolutely amazing. I think it really suits my game.”
Next up for Miyazaki is 14th seed Daria Kasatkina who is in incredible form having won Eastbourne last week. The variety mixed with power of Kasatkina is a deadly combination as she is capable of frustrating her opposition but also punching holes through the opposition’s defence. Kasatkina is a former quarter-finalist and given the draw as well as the development of her game, there is no reason why Kasatkina couldn’t repeat that result this year.
Miyazaki will look to repeat her serving masterclass from the Korpatsch match as she will need to time her aggression from the baseline well as she doesn’t want to overcommit against Kasatkina. Meanwhile Kasatkina will use a mixture of depth and power to control the rallies as well as playing counter-attacking tennis in order to expose Miyazaki’s court positioning. This should be a good experience for Miyazaki on a potentially big court but Kasatkina should have too much quality for the Brit on this occasion.
Prediction: Kasatkina in straight sets.

An incredible win for Sonay Kartal as she continued her form in qualifying by knocking out 29th seed Sorana Cirstea in three sets to win her first ever match in the main draw of Wimbledon. The Brit produced some impressive tennis in the final set to win it 6-0 and record the best win of her career. After her win Kartal said that it was her greatest and proudest win of her career as she spoke about the benefits of coming through qualifying as opposed to receiving a wildcard.
“My greatest and definitely my proudest. I think getting a first win at any slam, and to have it at Wimbledon makes it extra special,” Kartal delightfully stated.
“To have the people around me that I’ve spent my whole life since I was six playing with, they were here to experience that with me, I think that made it extra special today. I think that definitely played a big part. Last two years I was a wild card, so I hadn’t played matches so close to the first round.
“This year I felt really good going into this year. Obviously, I think I finished only a couple days ago. That was still pretty fresh. I was practicing well still. I think, yeah, this year I had a whole new load of confidence I didn’t have the previous years.”
Next up for Kartal is Clara Burel who has been in poor form for most of the year but will have tournaments where she sparks into life. One of those tournaments was at Roland Garros where she defeated Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina back-to-back to reach the third round. Since Roland Garros it’s been back to poor form for Burel who lost four matches in a row and will now look to find her confidence again at Wimbledon.
Kartal will aim to make a better start than she did against Cirstea as she will look to dictate play on the forehand and make Burel feel uncomfortable. Meanwhile Burel will use a mixture of depth and variety to force errors from Kartal’s game. It will be a good match to see whether Kartal can keep her confidence going against a player that she is expected to beat. The Brit should have the quality to go through even if there are bumps in the road.
Prediction: Kartal in three sets.
