Jannik Sinner will be looking to extend his campaign at SW19 when he faces Matteo Berrettini in the second round. The world number one’s first round performance was impressive all round except his dip in form in the third set, where Yannick Hanfmann took advantage to win the set 6-3. Despite the slight setback, the 22-year-old went on to win the fourth and final set 6-3 and move on to the next round.

Berrettini also came through the first round in four sets. A difficult opponent in Marton Fucsovics proved to cause some issues in the third set, likewise to Sinner. However, the Italian Stallion’s heavy hitting and huge serve is a match made in heaven with the grass court, and so closing out the final set 6-1 saw Berrettini through to the second round at Wimbledon.

The pair’s first meeting came in the second round at Toronto last year where Sinner dismantled Berrettini in a straight set victory, and eventually went onto the win his first ever Masters 1000 tournament afterwards. For their second meeting, expect a close encounter featuring several penetrating forehands, big serves and the Wimbledon crowd at Centre Court on the edge of their seats.

With Berrettini still making a comeback to the tour, a match against the world number one will be a tough task, who on the other side of things is at the peak of their tennis powers with one grand slam to his name already this season.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner in four sets.

Wildcard Naomi Osaka will face the 19th seed Emma Navarro in the second round at Wimbledon. Osaka returned to Wimbledon for the first time in five years with her first-round match against the world number 53 Diane Parry, who she dispatched in three sets 6-1 1-6 6-4. The four-time grand slam champion’s win was uncertain from the beginning, but in a season of ups and downs, this victory would’ve felt good.

Emma Navarro came flying out the blocks taking out Wang Qiang 6-0 6-2 in the first round. An impressive display no doubt, although her opponent hasn’t appeared on the WTA tour since January and is currently ranked at 479 in the world. The American has had a successful season so far with a 37-15 record and will be a threat to any player she faces.

With Osaka’s decorated career and Navarro’s potential, this clash highlights the tournament’s blend of seasoned champions and emerging talents. This match will be the first professional meeting between the former world no. 1 and the 19th seed, adding an element of unpredictability. Osaka’s experience and power will be pitted against Navarro’s emerging skills and youthful energy.

Prediction: Osaka in three sets.

What a second round treat we have on our hands between Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils. Both players are in the last stages of their careers, Wawrinka aged 39 and Monfils 37, but words like slow and lethargic don’t apply either of these incredible athletes who have entertained the tennis world for several years.

Wawrinka put on an impressive display in his first-round match against the Brit wildcard, Charles Broom, with a 6-3 7-5 6-4 straight set victory. Despite the home crowd cheering for their Briton and the 13 year age gap between the two players, the Swiss performed extremely well with his beautiful one-handed backhand and aggressive forehand proving too much for Broom.

Monfils faced his compatriot and 22nd seed Adrian Mannarino in the first round, a difficult first hurdle to overcome for the Frenchman. Four sets were needed to take down Mannarino, but the showman’s experience and aggressive baseline play were enough to take him through.

This match is likely to be a closely fought contest given the players’ experience and contrasting styles. Stan Wawrinka’s power and big-match experience could give him a slight edge, but Gael Monfils’ athleticism and ability to entertain and disrupt could turn the match in his favour.

Prediction: Gael Monfils in five sets.
