Jannik Sinner continued his nine-game unbeaten grass court swing with a straight set victory over Ben Shelton in the round of 16. Shelton was always going to put up a fight, but the Italian’s pinpoint precision and power proved to be too much for the American, and the match finished 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 with Sinner progressing to the next round.

As for Daniil Medvedev, the Russian faced Grigor Dimitrov in the round of 16 but the match was cut short as Dimitrov was forced to retire due to a knee injury. In the match prior, Medvedev clashed heads with the in-form German, Jan-Lennard Struff, to which he dispatched in a close four sets.

Both these players made the semi-finals at the All-English Lawn Tennis Club last year, with the current world number one (Sinner) falling short to the former world number one in Novak Djokovic. The Russian on the other hand was taken down by the Carlos Alcaraz who eventually would go on and win the tournament.

In the 11 meetings between the pair so far, Medvedev currently leads the head-head 6-5. However, most would place their bets in favour of Sinner ahead of this matchup with the invincible form he is in this year. There is a definite clash in styles with Medvedev’s defensive and tactical baseline play being opposite to that of Sinner’s reliance on aggressive groundstrokes from both his forehand and backhand.

Prediction: Sinner in straight sets.

Emma Navarro worked her magic to take down the second seed and fellow American, Coco Gauff, in the round of 16 for a huge upset. After the world number one, Iga Swiatek, was knocked out in the third round, all the spotlight moved onto Gauff as she was believed to be next in line for the title. Despite all this, Navarro took down the favourite in a 6-4, 6-3 thrashing with an incredible performance to move onto the quarters.

Just like Medevedev, Jasmine Paolini’s round of 16 match was cut short as Madison Keys was forced to retire due to injury. The Italian has played a high level of tennis over the grass court season, reaching the semi-finals at Eastbourne and beating the likes of Bianca Andreescu in the lead up to her quarter-final battle against Navarro.

Navarro currently leads the head-head 3-0, with their last meeting dating back to March at Miami earlier this season where the American prevailed in three sets. However, there’s no doubt this will be her toughest match against the seventh seed as Paolini’s game has come a long way in such a short amount of time. This will also be their first tie on the grass, where both have looked comfortable during their time at SW19.

Expect a tight and all-out battle with each player bidding for a place in the semi-finals where they will face either the qualifier Lulu Sun, or Donna Vekic.

Prediction: Paolini in three sets.

The former Wimbledon champion, Alcaraz, is set to face Tommy Paul for a place in the semi-finals. Fortunately, the Spaniard’s round of 16 match against Ugo Humbert wasn’t as close a call as his five-set classic with Frances Tiafoe in the round before.

Alcaraz displayed a more consistent performance against the Frenchman, although he did drop off in the third where Humbert capitalised and won the set 6-1. The third seed fought back and prevented a brewing comeback as he took the fourth and final set 7-5 and moved onto the quarterfinals.

Paul faced the Spanish veteran, Roberto Bautista Agut, in the round of 16 where he made easy work of his opponent in a 6-2, 7-6, 6-2 straight set victory. This is the American’s longest run at SW19 in his career, with his previous record ending at the third round back in 2022 where he lost to Cameron Norrie.

This is the first meeting between the two in 2024 but in 2023 they faced each other on three occasions all at ATP Masters 1000 level tournaments. So far only one of their four meetings has been a straight set win, which suggests the pair are closely matched and can exploit each other’s weaknesses.

Alcaraz is the clear favourite having won the title in 2023 and holding the higher ranking among the two. However, Tommy Paul is no walkover, and his all-court game is well suited to the grass court surface.

Prediction: Alcaraz in four sets.

Qualifier, Sun, has shocked the tennis world with her astounding run at Wimbledon this year. The Kiwi scraped through her second qualification round in a third set tiebreak, but ten days later she has just beaten Emma Raducanu in the round of 16 to move onto the quarterfinals.

This is Sun’s maiden Wimbledon and what a tournament she has had so far, but continuing this run and beating Vekic on the big stage is a difficult ask. Vekic played Paula Badosa in the last round and came through winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 to make this her longest run at the championships in her career.

A first meeting between two players will always create ambiguity and uncertainty in how a game will go. Vekic as all Sun’s previous opponents still goes into the tie as the favourite, but the qualifier is sure to be oozing in confidence after her display so far.

Prediction: Vekic in three sets.
