Iga Swiatek [1] v Petra Martic H2H: Swiatek leads 3-0

Iga Swiatek powered through her first-round matchup with a 6-3 6-4 victory over the 2020 Australian Open winner, Sofia Kenin. The Pole was dominant in her display on Court 1, showing no remorse or weakness in her play to her opponent; a warning shot to anyone who stands in her way.

Up next for the world number one is Petra Martic, ranked 85th in the world and a two-time WTA tour title winner. The Croatian worked hard to make it through the first round, taking down the Brit Wildcard Francesca Jones in a tough 3-6 6-1 6-2 victory. To have any chance against Swiatek her game will need to next to perfect as it is a big step up from her first-round clash.

So far, their battles have gone the way of the 2024 Roland Garros winner, leading three to nil in all their head-heads. Despite her supposed weakness being the grass court, Swiatek beat Martic in straight sets in the third round of Wimbledon last year and will be looking to do the same in the second round a year later.

This match promises to be a fascinating battle of contrasting styles. Swiatek will look to impose her power and aggressive play, while Martic will aim to disrupt Swiatek’s rhythm with her diverse shot selection. All in all, it’s hard not to back the Pole with the fascinating form she’s been on all year.

Prediction: Iga Swiatek in straight sets.

Hubert Hurkacz [7] v Arthur Fils H2H: First Meeting
Wimbledon 2024 Wimbledon, UK
Grass Prize Money: £93,000
First on Court No.2, play starts at 11:00am BST BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Red Button and BBC IPlayer

The Seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz will start play on Court No.2, facing Arthur Fils in the second round at Wimbledon. The Pole began his campaign against Radu Albot who impressively made it through qualification but was stopped in his tracks, losing 7-5 6-4 6-3 6-4 to the six-foot-six-man mountain in the first round. Hurkacz is 6-1 on grass in 2024, his only loss on the surface to Jannik Sinner in the final at Halle.

Fils also required four sets to take down his opponent in the first round. The Frenchman faced his adjacent countryman, Dominic Stricker, in which he navigated his way through a 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-4 battle. The 20-year-old star has struggled in Grand Slams so far in 2024, with his furthest run only taking him to the second round back at the Australian Open in January. To take down a top 10 opponent in Hurkacz and move into the third round will be a monumental step forward in his career.

As it becomes their first ever meeting on tour, it’s difficult to suggest how this tie may go in terms of tactics and clash in play style. Hurkacz is very reliant on his huge serve and is extremely difficult to break down as a player, whereas Fils is more dynamic and aggressive with his play, but more vulnerable when under attack.

Prediction: Hurkacz in four sets.

Caroline Wozniacki [WC] v Leylah Fernandez [30] H2H: First Meeting
Wimbledon 2024 Wimbledon, UK
Grass Prize Money: £93,000
Last on Court 12, not before 16:30pm BST BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Red Button and BBC IPlayer

Caroline Wozniacki will face Leylah Fernandez in the second round at Wimbledon. Despite suffering a fall in Bad Homburg in the week prior to the All-England Club, the Wildcard Wozniacki blitzed her way through the first round in a 6-2 6-0 victory against the American qualifier, Alycia Parks. The former Australian Open champion showed she’s still more than capable of competing at the highest level and will be looking to extend her stay in SW19 even longer.

Fernandez began her 2024 Wimbledon journey against the fierce Italian, Lucia Bronzetti. The Canadian matched Wozniacki with a straight set win, concluding Bronzetti’s first round with a 6-4 6-3 thrashing and onto the next round. The 30th seed comes into the tournament with some fine form on the grass court, reaching the final in Eastbourne last week. Fernandez will be a major threat to any player with the confidence she has, but one small slip up is all it takes for it to drop in this game.

This will be the first career meeting between Wozniacki and Fernandez, setting up an intriguing contest of unfamiliarity and adaptation. The Dane’s veteran savvy and defensive skills give her a slight edge in this contest, particularly if she can weather Fernandez’s initial onslaught and draw the young Canadian into longer rallies. However, Fernandez’s aggression and recent form make her a dangerous opponent.

Prediction: Wozniacki in three sets.
