It was another first round exit for Dan Evans as he lost in straight sets to Mallorca champion Alejandro Tabilo.

Evans did well to recover from injury in time for Wimbledon after suffering a nasty fall at Queen’s Club.

Ultimately the Brit was outclassed by the in-form Tabilo even if Evans was so close to winning the second set.

After the match Evans gave an update on his knee injury after a difficult two days in the office.

“Obviously, yeah, circumstances not ideal with what happened at Queen’s. Did a good job to get on the court. Thought I played a pretty solid match, considering,” Evans stated at the beginning of his press conference.

“Yeah, I’ll have to take some time after the tournament to work on obviously my knee, yeah, getting it stronger. I didn’t get much time from when I did it to do the work it needs after slipping and the damage that occurred. But, yeah, it’s not ideal. It’s a work in progress.”

Unideal preparation for Evans as he came up short in terms of achieving a good result at Wimbledon.

It’s been a tough season for Evans who has dealt with multiple injuries as well as enduring a clay court season that ended winless.

Heading into the end of last season Evans had all the momentum but an injury in Vienna derailed his progress and is now starting from scratch.

Speaking about the last year Evans explained that the lack of confidence has been ‘frustrating’ but the Brit revealed he has a plan to get back on track.

“I have an idea. Just totally got derailed at the end of last year,” Evans analysed.

“I was probably playing the best tennis I’ve played ever in Vienna last year when I was playing. That was sort of the start of a rocky, rocky road going forward. Then felt really good in the clay. I felt really good at the start of the grass. Then that happened. So, yeah, it’s frustrating. The bottom line, it’s frustrating.

“To be out there today, is really a spectator taking part, if I’m totally honest. I’m obviously trying my best to get a win there. There’s levels and there’s levels. If you’ve not done the appropriate work for 10 days or 7 days, whatever it was I didn’t play for, these guys are too good. That’s not a good feeling and it’s frustrating.”

The next big event for Evans to look forward to the Olympics in Paris as he will represent Great Britain for the first time at the games.

Evans was supposed to play in Tokyo but a positive COVID-19 test saw the Brit’s chances of playing dashed.

Now the Brit is looking forward to representing his country not only in singles but also in the doubles event alongside Andy Murray.

“Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. It will be special, I guess. Yeah, I can’t wait to sort of represent my country,” Evans explained.

“It’s sort of quite far back in my mind at the minute. It’s been a frustrating grass court season, I’d say. Yeah, once I’m done here, I’ll take stock and move forward.”

The Olympics start on the 27th of July and conclude on the fourth of August.
