Charles Broom has had a decent season winning a couple of ITF tournaments as well as reaching the final of the Nottingham Challenger. As a result of a decent grass court season, Broom has earned a Wimbledon main draw wildcard and will be earning his debut at SW19. The world number 245 has a good game for grass as he is capable of being effective and efficient at the net. Now the Brit will look for a good performance as he hopes to use this as a platform for bigger things in the future.

A match of a lifetime awaits Broom as he takes on former Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in what will be the biggest match of Broom’s career. The 39 year-old has won three Grand Slam titles and is potentially edging close to the end of his career. Despite an illustrious career, Wawrinka has never really conquered the grass and the world number 93 would love nothing more than to achieve a new milestone this year at Wimbledon before his career comes to an end.

The key to the match for Broom will be to serve consistently well and to rush Wawrinka’s backhand as he will look to approach the net. Meanwhile, Wawrinka will use his experience to control the tempo of the match and step inside the baseline in order to produce attacking patterns of play. This will be a good experience for Broom and if he settles the nerves he is more than capable of winning a set but Wawrinka’s quality should prevail in the other three sets.

Prediction: Wawrinka in four sets.

It’s a return to Wimbledon for Liam Broady as the world number 146 plays in the main draw of Wimbledon for the seventh time. Last year it was a moment to savour for Broady as he reached the third round for a second consecutive year, securing his first top ten win against Casper Ruud on Centre Court. However Broady’s preparation for Wimbledon has been less from ideal having only played one event in the last three months and that was at Eastbourne. Regardless of what happens at SW19, Broady will hope to remain fit and healthy as he looks to recover his ranking.

A good chance for Broady to regain some form awaits in the first round as he takes on erratic Dutchman Botic Van De Zandschulp. Once a former US Open quarter-finalist, now the world number 96 is struggling for form having only recorded ten wins all season and even admitted that he is considering retirement from the sport. The 28 year-old will hope those comments were reactionary as he looks to rediscover his motivation and love for the sport at Wimbledon.

Broady will hope he can find some consistency on serve as he looks to be aggressive and put Van De Zandschulp under early pressure. Meanwhile the Dutchman will use his big forehand to put Broady under pressure as he will look to finish points off at the net. This is an unpredictable match given this is only Broady’s second match back from injury but as long as the Brit can remain consistent and persistent then he should win this match against an out-of-sorts Van De Zandschulp.

Prediction: Broady in four sets.

It was an incredible performance from Arthur Fery last year as the Brit took Daniil Medvedev to four sets in his Wimbledon debut last year. Since then Fery has climbed to 243 in the rankings having earned good wins at Challenger level including one over David Goffin. Although the grass court season hasn’t gone according to plan, Fery will aim for a repeat of last year’s performance as he continues his bid to climb up the rankings.

Next for Fery is German Daniel Altmaier who enters Wimbledon having produced good results at clay court Challengers in Perugia and Sassuolo. However, when it comes to Wimbledon Altmaier is yet to win a match at SW19 which is surprising given how effective his one-handed backhand can be. The German will aim to improve that form as he searches for a place in the world’s top 70.

Fery will continue to be aggressive from the baseline as well as using the serve and volley to rush Altmaier’s game. Altmaier will aim to be aggressive on the backhand side as he will need to be consistent on serve. This is a very winnable match for Fery and if the Brit can rush his Altmaier’s shot selection then he has every chance of winning his first Wimbledon match.

Prediction: Fery in four sets.
