Boulter will need to be aggressive on serve in order to neutralize Maria’s effective returning especially on grass where she likes to slice the ball and approach the net.

Playing styles and prediction

Maria is a big threat on grass as the 36 year-old is still capable of causing trouble to big seeds with her unorthodox style of play. The German had a good run in Surbiton where she reached the final and is a former semi-finalist here. A mixture of a deadly slice and neat volleying at the net is a dynamic and effective combination on grass as Maria looks to cause more upsets at this year’s Wimbledon.

Boulter will aim to serve aggressively and apply as much pressure as possible with the key to the match being to pin Maria behind the baseline. Meanwhile, Maria will stick to her strengths as she uses the slice to force errors from Boulter while approaching the net to finish points off quickly. In previous years Boulter may have been too erratic to win this match but a new maturity has entered the Brit’s game which suggests she should have too much quality for the German in this match.

Prediction: Boulter in three sets.
