Another heartbreaking defeat for Andy Murray as for a second year in a row the Brit lost at the second round stage. Murray lost a five set thriller to Stefanos Tsitsipas in a match that lasted two days with the two-time champion leading by two sets to one heading into the second day.
However Murray lacked energy, consistency and momentum as he couldn’t win the big points and ultimately went out to the fifth seed. After the match Murray couldn’t hide his disappointment and admitted the defeats feel tougher with every year.
“I’m obviously very disappointed just now,” a despondent Murray said in his press conference.
“Yeah, obviously you never know how many opportunities you’re going to get to play here. Yeah, the defeats maybe, yeah, feel a bit tougher. But, to be honest, every year that Wimbledon’s not gone how I would like, it’s been hard.
“There was some things I did very well, other things that I did poorly. Obviously only lost serve once across — I think I only lost serve once across five sets. My return game was not good enough.”
There’s lots of things for Murray to reflect on over the next few weeks as the defeat seems like a missed opportunity for the former world number one given his draw and Tsitsipas’ recent shaky form. In his press conference Murray acknowledged that it was a missed opportunity and stated that the injury that he suffered towards the end of the first day of action wasn’t anything serious.
“I mean, ultimately this was an opportunity for me,” Murray agonisingly admitted.
“I had a good chance of having a proper run for the first time in a long time at a slam. I didn’t take it. Regardless of the atmosphere and those things, it’s still very, very disappointing to be sitting here right now.
“I wouldn’t describe it as an injury. I obviously slipped. Had some initial pain and discomfort when that happens. It’s like sort of a jarring of the joint. Can be a little bit sore. I pulled up okay today.”

Murray looks to rediscover motivation
Despite defeat Murray remains defiant about his future as he seems to determined to prolong his future for as long as possible. Although Murray is defiant about continuing, the Brit did reveal that he will need to find motivation over the next few weeks if he wants to keep pushing to reach his goals.
“I don’t know,” Murray responded when asked if he is confident about coming back to Wimbledon next year.
“Yeah, motivation is obviously a big thing. Continuing having early losses in tournaments like this don’t necessarily help with that. Yeah, it’s similar to I guess last year. I had a long think about things, spoke to my family, decided to keep on going.
“I don’t plan to stop right now. But, yeah, this one will take a little while to get over. Hopefully find the motivation again to keep training, keep pushing, try and keep getting better.”
The world number 40 will hope to keep improving as he targets a seeding place at the US Open later this year, which starts on the 28 August.
