Stefanos Tsitsipas [4] v Jordan Thompson H2H & Match Fundamentals
Stefanos Tsitsipas [4] v Jordan Thompson | H2H: Tsitsipas leads 1-0 |
Wimbledon 2022 | London, England |
Grass (O) | Prize Money: £78,000 |
First on Court One (13:00 BST) | BBC Sport |
Whatever happens at Wimbledon Stefanos Tsitsipas can say he has bettered last year’s result after winning his opening round encounter against Alexander Ritschard. But of course the Mallorca champion will have higher ambitions than that and he will hope his new-found confidence and form takes him to the latter stages at SW19.
However a testing second round awaits for the fourth seed as he takes on Jordan Thompson in the second round. The Australian is very familiar on the grass courts and has posted some of his best results on this surface including when he beat Andy Murray at Queen’s Club a few years ago. A big serve with sharp skills at the net means on his day he can be awkward for any opponent and will look to cause another upset at Wimbledon.
This will be a very tough test for Tsitsipas and will really show whether the Greek can go all the way this year. Thompson will look to be consistently aggressive and take the match to Tsitsipas who might be passive in the early stages. In the end Tsitsipas might just have the experience to edge this tight match.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in five sets
Elena Rybakina [17] v Bianca Andreescu H2H & Match Fundamentals
Elena Rybakina [17] v Bianca Andreescu | H2H: First Meeting |
Wimbledon 2022 | London, England |
Grass (O) | Prize Money: £78,000 |
Second on Court 12, not before 1pm BST | BBC Sport |
Elena Rybakina has had another consistent season and will look to take advantage of her form with a strong Wimbledon campaign. However despite her big serve and massive groundstrokes, grass hasn’t been her strongest surface of them all with her having fairly poor results on the surface. Now Rybakina will look to change all that and reach the latter stages at SW19.
A tough match awaits Rybakina in the second round though as she takes on Bad Homburg finalist Bianca Andreescu. The Canadian has had her injury problems in the past and complications with COVID but the former US Open champion is looking to rediscover her grand slam winning form on the grass courts. Can Andreescu find her attacking game consistently to put a run together.
This match puts power up against defensive variety and it’s a tough one to call in terms of who will come out on top. If Rybakina can hit her spots consistently then she will have a chance but the form book says Andreescu and her confidence should see her as the slight favourite here.
Prediction: Andreescu in three sets.
Denis Shapovalov [13] v Brandon Nakashima H2H & Match Fundamentals
Denis Shapovalov [13] v Brandon Nakashima | H2H: First Meeting |
Wimbledon 2022 | London, England |
Grass (O) | Prize Money: £78,000 |
Last on Court 12, not before 2:30pm BST | BBC Sport |
Denis Shapovalov is normally a hit or miss type of player but lately the Canadian has managed to find more misses than hits. Shapovalov has failed to find consistency in coaches, form and tactics as he has been left frustrated with his lack of rise up the rankings. However Shapovalov has good memories from reaching the semi-finals and he will hope to bounce off that energy this year.
Next up for Shapovalov is rising American star Brandon Nakashima who is still developing his skillset to make a jump into the top 50. Nakashima broke through last year with a run in the US hard court swing but has struggled to find consistency since then and will look to bring his athleticism and all-court game to Wimbledon.
This could be a tough match for Shapovalov if he isn’t consistent enough with his level and if Nakashima plays a smart tactical match. However the Canadian’s previous results on grass gives him the edge in what will be a fascinating match.
Prediction: Shapovalov in four sets.
