Men’s Draw Wimbledon 2022 Casualties
Round One | Round Two |
Felix Auger-Aliassime [6] | Casper Ruud [3] |
Hubert Hurkacz [7] | Diego Schwartzman [12] |
Matteo Berrettini [8] – COVID | Denis Shapovalov [13] |
Marin Cilic [14] – COVID | Reilly Opelka [15] |
Pablo Carreno Busta [16] | Roberto Bautista Agut [17] – COVID |
Grigor Dimitrov [18] | Filip Krajinovic [26] |
Sebastian Baez [31] |
There is no surprise to see Casper Ruud exit the tournament so early given the Norwegian had never won a match at Wimbledon before this year. However Matteo Berrettini and Marin Cilic’s COVID withdrawals have taken a hit to the bottom half of the draw and there is now a real opportunity for someone to take advantage heading into the third round.
So far Rafael Nadal has struggled through his opening two rounds so he will be happy to see Cilic and Berrettini disappear from his path to the final. There is also no Felix Auger-Aliassime for the Spaniard to contend with which he will be pleased to see. Although the Canadian’s exit is no surprise given he lost to in-form serve and volleyer Maxime Cressy.
In the top half of the draw, Novak Djokovic’s draw has held up so far with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and John Isner still remaining from his quarter of the draw. However the Serb’s semi-final opponent will be a first time grand slam semi-finalist after Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz’s surprise opening round exit to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The likes of Cameron Norrie and Frances Tiafoe will hope they can take advantage over the next couple of rounds.

Kaia Kanepi [31] |
As we approach the third round, half of the seeds have disappeared from the Women’s draw with Danielle Collins, Garbine Muguruza and Belinda Bencic’s exits being the most surprising. A special mention also goes to Beatriz Haddad Maia who had won two grass court titles heading into Wimbledon but exited at the opening round.
Anett Kontaveit and Emma Raducanu’s exits aren’t particularly surprising given their health and fitness issues. Karolina Pliskova would have been left disappointed as she exited to Katie Boulter with the sixth seed feeling she could have finally won a grand slam at SW19 this year.
There is a big opportunity in the bottom half of the draw with the likes of Ons Jabeur and Maria Sakkari looking to reach their first grand slam final. While former grand slam champions Angelique Kerber and Jelena Ostapenko will feel that they’ve hit form at the right time to give themselves a golden opportunity of going deep here.
In the top half of the draw Iga Swiatek has survived tough tests in the opening two rounds but is still the player to beat having extender her winning streak to 37 matches. In the second quarter Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep and Coco Gauff will believe they can meet Swiatek in the semi-finals on the second Thursday.
