Confidence is a great thing, as is the general rollercoaster of a Heather Watson match, but this time around she was the first to break but was pegged back immediately by Wang Qiang.

Watson kept the pressure on bringing up another six break points, before having to fend off some against her in the penultimate game. It was a nervy final game to bring up three set points as the Brit broke for the first set.

Again Watson battled hard to earn the first break on the second set, and held on to the advantage this time, before bad light stopped play with the Brit leading 5-3. She returned to win the final game and earns another match up with Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan.

Watson’s longer grass court season stands her in good stead here as she just about edges Kaja Juvan, who beat her comfortably in straight sets last year at the US Open.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Watson has had her fair shair of listless matches, and her loss at the US Open to Juvan came at the start of a miserable run of main draw opening round losses for the Brit which finally ended in Miami this year.

This time around Watson will have the crowd firmly behind her and in the wake of stunning wins for Katie Boulter and Liam Broady, we can only hope she feels truly motivated to reach the fourth round for the first time.

Juvan is in a similar position and will bring to the court a diverse game with clever use of angles, dazzling dropshots and plenty to keep Watson on the move.

Prediction: Watson in three sets.
