Few knew what this win would mean as Katie Boulter walked out very much business as usual (at least she knew where the new door was, unlike last year’s finalist Karolina Pliskova!). It was a fast start by the Brit who broke in the first game of the match but found herself pegged quickly back as Pliskova looked to be much at home in the surroundings, winning five of the last six games.

Things were a lot more edgy at the start of the second set with the pair exchanging breaks before going toe-to-toe to a tie-break. Boulter shot ahead in the tie0break and Pliskova always was going to be l=playing catch-up as Boulter levelled the match. A competitive decider saw no break point chances at all until the penultimate game where Boulter just pushed that bit harder to break, before serving out.

She went on to dedicate the match to the memory of her late grandmother, who passed away just a few days ago.

Playing Styles & Prediction

The ‘Serena-Slayer’ strangely was a person with very little confidence in herself, but that surely has changed with her landmark win over 23-time Slam champion. Tan can do most things well but while there are not specific strengths and weaknesses you could pinpoint, it is clear she has a huge fighting spirit.

Boulter can expect a lot of slices, dropshots and volleys while she will want to control big heavy baseline rallies.

It will be a big task for Boulter to come down from the whirlwind of emotions from the passing of her grandmother to a shot at the second week of Wimbledon. It is winnable – but it will be a fight.

Prediction: Boulter in three sets
