Although there were doubts before the tournament that Carlos Alcaraz could be effective and successful on grass, the Spaniard seems to be putting those doubts to rest as he is into the second week at SW19. After a tough opening round, the Spaniard has cruised through since then and his win over Oscar Otte was a statement win as he looks to put himself in contention for the Wimbledon title.

Before thinking about the final Alcaraz will first have to contend with fellow next generation star Jannik Sinner in the last 16. Sinner also had a fairly poor record on grass heading into this year’s Wimbledon but his last win over John Isner shows that the Italian is ready to make a deep run at Wimbledon. A powerful serve and all-court game, Sinner will be tough to beat heading into the second week.

This puts power against power with both players knowing how to serve and play big when it matters most. This match will be about who uses their power the smartest as Wimbledon fans will get a glimpse into the future and the Spaniard heads into this match as slight favourite but it’s expected that this will be a long and brutal encounter.

Prediction: Alcaraz in five sets.

Ons Jabeur has done everything possible to ensure she doesn’t repeat the same mistakes that she made in Paris. The Tunisian has done exactly that as she has only lost a total of 13 games on her way to the last 16. Now Jabeur looks to capitalise on an open section of the draw as she aims to become the first African tennis player to reach a Wimbledon final.

A tough match awaits Jabeur in the last 16 though as she takes on Elise Mertens who knocked out former champion Angelique Kerber in the last round. The Belgian has transformed her all-court defensive game into an aggressive counter-punching game and now looks to translate that into a deep grand slam run. Mertens has never been past the fourth round here, will she break the trend this year?

This will be a tricky obstacle for Jabeur on her way to the latter stages of the tournament as Mertens has beaten her before and has the type of game that has frustrated the Tunisian in past grand slams. However Jabeur’s game style is perfectly suited to grass and her use of variety as well as accurate serving should see her over the line even if this match goes the distance.

Prediction: Jabeur in three sets.

World number one Novak Djokovic has looked better and better with every match and the Serb put on a clinical when destroying compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic on Friday. Djokovic has a point to prove at Wimbledon as this may be his last chance to win a grand slam this season and the Serb will be keen to reduce the gap on Rafael Nadal for most grand slam titles over the next fortnight.

Next for Djokovic is quite possibly the story of Wimbledon in the form of Dutch wildcard Tim Van Rijthoven. Van Rijthoven earned a wildcard for this tournament by claiming his first ATP title in his home country where he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the S-Hertogenbosch final. Now he has backed that up by winning his first three matches and has had to overcome three surgeries and procedures to be at Wimbledon and is taking his opportunity with both hands.

This will be a tricky match for Djokovic with Van Rijthoven’s quick serve and one-handed backhand expected to cause the Serb lots of problems. However in a best of five match scenario, Djokovic should problem solve his way through the match and should advance into the last eight.

Prediction: Djokovic in four sets.
