Andy Murray [WC] def Nikoloz Basilashvili [24] 6-4 6-3 5-7 6-3

Andy Murray won his first singles match at Wimbledon for four years after defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili in four sets. A tight opening set was played by both players as Murray looked to change the direction constantly of the Georgian’s aggressive groundstrokes.

Basilashvili’s big serve mixed with a big forehand saw him manage to dictate points on his serve while Murray used his serve accurately to deny his higher-ranked opponent of having the opportunity to break.

Momentum on his side, the 2013 and 2016 champion drew the first break on his first break point to seal the opening set 6-4. The second set was similar as Basilashvili continued to create effective patterns of play to test Murray’s defensive skills and rapid movement.

After saving a couple of break points, the Brit used the crowd to his advantage and went on the attack as he broke in the eighth game and served out a two set to love lead. In the third set Murray blasted his way past a dejected 24th seed as he remarkably went 5-0 up.

However something even more remarkable was about to follow as Murray could not close out the match as his rustiness on a singles court was evident. Seven games in a row for the world number 28 as he sealed the first set 7-5 and all of the sudden looked a man on a mission.

Luckily for Murray play would stop due to the closing of the roof and the three-time grand slam champion would return to break three times and win the match in four sets.

After the match Murray gave some perspective on how tricky the last few months have been:

“It’s been extremely tough, even these last few months. I didn’t have the most serious of injuries but it has been extremely frustrating not being able to get on the court. I’ve had such little momentum over the last few years. I just kept trying, working hard in the gym and doing all the right things to get me back into this position.”

Assessing the numbers, Murray will have to elevate his game on break points down and take his opportunities when it matters especially with the German having a big first serve and his ability to use it effectively.

Playing Styles and predictions

As mentioned Otte has a big first serve and likes to end points early which is exactly what he managed to accomplish in his five set win over fellow qualifier Arthur Rinderknech. The German is in relatively good form this year but feels more comfortable on a clay court especially with the movement.

The key for Murray is getting as many returns back as possible as well as testing the movement of the German who is in unfamiliar territory. The question will be how much Otte will have in the tank after his five set epic and how Murray’s body has recovered. Tactically this match will suit the three-time grand slam champion and a passage into the third round is on the cards.

Prediction: Murray in straight sets.
