Cameron Norrie [29] def. Alex Bolt [WC] 6-3 6-1 6-2

A slow start by the British No. 2 Cameron Norrie against Aussie wildcard Alex Bolt looked as though it was a symptom of playing his first round match over two says. How wrong we would be, as not only did Norrie reel off 11 games in a row to take the first set and a rather good portion of the second before Bolt managed to stop the rot.

Norrie was having none of it though, breaking early in the third set, and keeping the pressure on to limit his time out on court – and to set up a clash with Roger Federer.

There are some areas that Norrie excels. Neither man has the most potent serve, but they rely more n placement and accuracy and ae closely matched in holding their servce games. Federer is far stronger at saving break points but Norrie will be looking to punish second serves.

Playing Styles & Prediction

What we will see is two contrasting styles – where once the balletic style of Federer used to dominate on the courts, he will come up against a player who will run everything down. Ok so he has faced that many a time – Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, but Norrie is scrappy and has phenomenal fitness.

During lockdown the Brit pulled on his running shoes and rekindled his love of running, and it has stood him in great stead since the restart. This year in particular has been outstanding for Norrie, and Federer should feel a little tentative.

His preparation was stilted with early exits.

Sure, the Swiss has a lot of experience, but this will not affect Norrie who will just fight for every ball, and this could be a tough battle for the Swiss. He was struggling against Adrian Mannarino until the Frenchman got injured. We could argue the same was true against Richard Gasquet, until he too struggled with injury.

Prediction: Norrie in five sets
