Alfie Hewett was second seed at the US Open. In the first round the Brit was against Japanese player Takuya Miki. The Brit dominated the first set, as Miki struggled to stay with him. The second set was a little bit closer as the Japanese player held serve more. Eventually, Hewett broke through and moved into the next round in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
The semi-final saw Hewett against third seed Gustavo Fernandez. The Argentine proved to be little trouble for the Brit who dominated both sets. Hewett only lost one game all match as Fernandez could do nothing with the way Hewett was playing. The Brit eased into the final 6-0, 6-1.
In the final Hewett was playing his doubles partner, unseeded Gordon Reid. The first set was fairly close, as they know each other’s game. Hewett, though eventually made the breakthrough and took the lead. The second set started the same, with both holding serve well. The seed eventually broke serve to lift the title 6-4, 6-3.
Junior singles
After winning in Sion last week, Dahnon Ward was looking for his first junior grand slam singles title. The Brit was unseeded and drew Ivar van Rijt in the quarter-final. Ward dominated the first set, losing only one game to take the lead. Van Rijt fought back in the second set though, and forced a tiebreak to level up the match. The final set was close at first before Ward secured the break of serve to move into the next round.
In the semi-final Ward was against Maximillian Taucher. The Brit was in sparkling form as he dominated the first set. The Austrian made more of a match of it in the second set. Taucher stayed with Ward at the start, before eventually the Brit broke serve and moved into the final 6-1, 6-3.
The final saw the Brit against top seed Francesco Felici. The Italian stayed with the Brit at the start. However, Ward managed to break serve and take the lead. The second set was a little easier, as Ward broke early and didn’t look back. Felici tried but just could not get back into the match. Ward lifted the Junior wheelchair title 6-4, 6-3.
