SARDINIA, ITALY – Lucy Shuker claimed the doubles title in a pre Wimbledon warm up event. Shuker also made the final in the singles.

Lucy Shuker entered the Sardinia Open as a warm up to Wimbledon. The Brit was the second seed. In the first round Shuker was up against Emmanuelle Morch. The Dutch player started well enough, managing to hold serve. However, Shuker ramped up the pressure and broke serve to take the lead. Morch was no match for the Brit in the second set. The seed dominated and didn’t lose a game all set. The Brit progressed to the next round in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

In the quarter-final Shuker was against the only other Brit in the draw Cornelia Oosthuizen. The seed fought hard to obtain the break of serve against Oosthuizen and took the lead. Shuker dominated the second set with Oosthuizen struggling to hold serve. The seed went through to the semi-final in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

The semi-final saw the Brit against the fourth seed Nalani Buob. The Swiss got off to the better start, dominating the first set. Buob broke Shuker at will and was soon ahead. The second set saw the Brit dominate with the Swiss struggling to hold serve. In the final set both players went toe to toe, trying to get ahead. Shuker finally secured the break of serve and moved into the final 1-6, 6-1, 7-5.

In the final the Brit was against Colombian Angelica Bernal. The top seed and Shuker fought hard, neither giving an inch. Eventually Bernal broke through and took the lead. In the second set, Bernal outplayed the Brit to dominate. The top seed took the title 7-5, 6-2.

Doubles

Shuker teamed up with Macarena Cabrillana and were top seeds. The Brit/Chilean had a bye in the quarter-finals. In the semi-final Shuker & Cabrillana were against Nalani Buob & Angela Grosswiler. The Swiss pairing were no match for the Brit/Chilean. Shuker & Cabrillana dominated both sets, and didn’t lose a game at all. The top seeds moved into the final 6-0, 6-0.

In the final the top seeds were against second seeds Emmanuelle Morch & Cornelia Oosthuizen. The Brit/Chilean broke serve early in the first set to take the lead. However, in the second set Morch & Oosthuizen fought back and broke the top seed serve to level up the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak the top seeds edged through to claim the title 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.

Wheelchair Round Up

Gregory Slade was defeated by Niels Vink in the quarter-final in the Quads singles in Sardinia 6-1, 6-2.

Antony Cotterill was defeated by Alberto Saja in the quarter-final in the Quads singles in Sardinia 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Gregory Slade with Donald Ramphadi were defeated by Heath Davidson & Niels Vink in the semi-final in the Quads doubles in Sardinia 6-0, 6-3.

Antony Cotterill with Alfredo Di Cosmo were defeated by Heath Davidson & Niels Vink in the final in the Quads doubles 6-0, 6-1.
