- Alfie Hewett does the double double in Georgia
- Lucy Shuker takes the doubles title
ROME, GEORGIA, USA – Alfie Hewett claimed the singles and doubles titles, completing the double double in Georgia. Lucy Shuker took the doubles title on the women’s side.
Alfie Hewett was the top seed in the event and received a first round bye. In the second round the Brit was against Brayan Tapia. The Chilean was no match for the Brit who dominated from the outset. Hewett didn’t drop a game all match and eased into the next round 6-0, 6-0.
In the quarter-final Hewett was against his doubles partner and seventh seed Gordon Reid. The top seed dominated the first set, but Reid did manage to hold serve a couple of times. The second set was a little closer, as Reid tried to fight back. Eventually, Hewett broke serve and took the match 6-2, 6-3.
The semi-final saw Hewett against fourth seed Joachim Gerard. The Brit and the Belgian stayed close at the start of the set. However, Hewett managed to secure the break of serve to move ahead. The second set saw Gerard re-group and fight back, breaking the serve of the Brit and levelling up the match. The final set saw the Brit dominate and Hewett took the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
In the final Hewett was against second seed Tokito Oda. The Japanese stayed with the Brit in the first set, making Hewett work hard. The Brit was taken to a tiebreak, which he eased through and took the lead. The second set saw Hewett dominate the Japanese and lift the title in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-1.
Doubles
Hewett & Reid were the second seeds in the doubles and as seeds received a first round bye. The quarter-final saw the Brits against Frederic Cattaneo & Conner Stroud. The seeds dominated the match from the outset. Cattaneo & Stroud were unable to hold serve in the first set as the seeds eased into the lead. The second set was more dominance by the Brits, although Cattaneo & Stroud managed to hold serve a couple of times. It was no use though, as Hewett & Reid moved into the semi-final 6-0, 6-2.
In the semi-final the Brits were against third seeds Tom Egberink & Maikel Scheffers. The Dutch pair stayed with the Brits in the first set, and it looked like a tiebreak was on the cards. However, right at the end of the set, Hewett & Reid broke serve and took the lead. The second set was much easier for the Brits. Hewett & Reid broke early and the third seeds were unable to get back on terms. Hewett & Reid moved into the final 7-5, 6-3.
The final saw three Brits on the court. Hewett & Reid were against the fourth seeds Ben Bartram & Tokito Oda. Both pairs fought hard in the first set, but it was the Brits who made the breakthrough and got the lead. The second set was pure domination by Hewett & Reid, as Bartram & Oda couldn’t hold serve. The Brits lifted the title 6-3, 6-0.
This also meant that Hewett had complete the “double double” here in Georgia, as the Brit claimed both titles last season too.
Women’s Doubles
Lucy Shuker & Dana Mathewson were the second seeds here. In their quarter-final Shuker & Mathewson were against Cornelia Oosthuizen & Nalani Buob. The Brit/American dominated from the outset as the Brit/Swiss struggled to stay with them. Shuker & Mathewson eased into the next round 6-2, 6-2.
The semi-final pitched the second seeds against Macarena Cabrillana & Pauline Deroulede. The Brit/American pair made light work of the Chilean/French pair. Cabrillana & Deroulede did manage to make a match of it, and it took a single break of serve in each set to secure the win and move into the next round. The second seeds did that in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
In the final, Shuker & Mathewson were against the top seeds Kgothatso Montjane & Aniek Van Koot. The top seeds got off to a better start and broke the Brit/American serve to take the lead. The second set, though, was much closer. Shuker & Mathewson re-grouped and stayed with Montjane & Van Koot. It looked as if a tiebreak was on the cards. However, the second seeds managed to break serve just at the right time and levelled up the match. The match tiebreak was a very close affair, which eventually, the Brit/American edged to lift the title 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.
