- Brits go four from four in wheelchair doubles finals
- Andy Lapthorne, Alfie Hewett & Gordon Reid claim fourth successive titles

NEW YORK, USA – Andy Lapthorne, Alfie Hewett, Gordon Reid & Jordanne Whiley all claimed doubles titles at the US Open.

At Flushing Meadows in the US Open a shorter format of matches took place for the Wheelchair tennis players. Having fought to be able to participate this years event because of the coronavirus pandemic and able-bodied players stepping in to persuade the organisers to allow the wheelchair event to take place, several Brits headed off to New York.

Quads event
The Quad singles took the format of a Round Robin event. Andy Lapthorne first played David Wagner, the Brit dominated the first set to take the lead, Wagner fought back and levelled up in the second. The final set went the way of the Brit to win the first match 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Unfortunately Lapthorne lost his other two matches to end his singles. However, in the doubles the Brit teamed up with Dylan Alcott and they faced the Wagner and Sam Schroder. The American/Dutch pair took the first set, however the Brit/Australian regrouped and got an early lead in the second set. Despite Wagner & Schroder breaking back it was the Lapthorne & Alcott that won the final match tiebreak to take the match 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. This gave Lapthorne his fourth US Open title in a row and Alcott his second.
Men’s Wheelchair event
Alfie Hewett & Gordon Reid were also looking to claim their fourth US Open title in a row. The Brits were the top seed and in the semi-final were up against Gustavo Fernández & Shingo Kunieda. Hewett & Reid had little difficulty in defeating Argentine/Japanese pairing, breaking in both sets to move into the final 6-3, 6-3.
In the final the Brits were against the second seeds Stéphane Houdet & Nicolas Peifer. The Frenchmen were competitive in the first set, however Hewett & Reid broke to take the set. In the second it was all one way traffic as the Brits dominated to take the match 6-4, 6-1.
Hewett & Reid were also in the singles, unfortunately in the first round they played each other. Hewett dominated the entire match, with Reid struggling to get any games on the board. Hewett moved into the next round 6-0, 6-2. Hewett faced Fernández in the semi-final, the Brit broke to take the first set, but the Argentine dominated the second. The final set went the way of the Brit as he broke to take the match 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. The final saw the Brit against Kunieda who was the top seed. Hewett managed to keep things level as each took a set, the final set went to a tiebreak which the Japanese took to win the title 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3).
Ladies Wheelchair event
Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker were in the singles. Unfortunately both lost their first round matches to end their singles journey early. Whiley lost in straight sets to the top seed Diede de Groot 6-3, 6-4, whilst Shuker pushed Columbian Angelica Bernal the distance in their match before bowing out 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
However, in the doubles things were very different. Whiley partnered again with Japanese player Yui Kamiji and were the second seeds. Their semi-final was against Bernal & Dana Mathewson. The Brit/Japanese were on court less than an hour as they dominated to make the final 6-2, 6-1. Shuker partnered with Momoko Ohtani and were against the top seeds Marjolein Buis & De Groot. The Dutch pair were unstoppable as they totally dominated Shuker & Ohtani to move into the final 6-0, 6-1.
The final saw Whiley & Kamiji against the top seeds. The Brit/Japanese were on form and took the match to the top seeds. Buis & De Groot found their serve broken in both sets, and could not get back on terms. Whiley & Kamiji took their second US title together 6-3, 6-3.
The next event for the Wheelchair players commences 16th September in Ile De Re, France.
