  • Alfie Hewett & Gordon Reid claim 3rd consecutive Roland Garros title
  • The Brits were top seeds
  • Dropped only one set
PARIS, FRANCE – Alfie Hewett & Gordon Reid were the top seeds at the French Open. The Brits were looking to lift their 3rd consecutive French Open title, and 10th Grand Slam in a row.

Alfie Hewett & Gordon Reid teamed up again for the French Open. The Brits were the top seeds, and as a result received a bye into the semi-final. Their opponents were the Spanish pair of Daniel CaverzaschiMartín de la Puente. The Brits dominated the first set, as the Spaniards struggled to get to grips with Hewett & Reid. The top seeds soon had the set in the bag. The second set saw Caverzaschi & De La Puente re-group. The Spaniards broke serve and levelled up the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak the Brits edged through to take the win and move into the final 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.

The final saw the Brits against Gustavo Fernández & Shingo Kunieda. The Argentine/Japanese pair broke early, but Hewett & Reid managed to come back from 3-1 down to force a tiebreak. Fernandez & Kunieda kept the breaker close, however the Brits managed to secure two set points. A Hewett topspin backhand winner on the second set point put the top seeds ahead. The second set saw the Brits have match points at 5-4, but the Argentine/Japanese pair fought back and once again a tiebreak ensued. Once ahead the Brits managed to keep there and lifted the title 7-6(5), 7-6(5).

Hewett told the press afterwards: “I think this is probably one of the best victories that we have had together. Gordy was saying earlier, it’s probably like 50, 60 percent out there today, and we’re still able to take home the title.

Reid said that they were not stopping yet.

“I think it’s obviously a record that we are really proud of. It just shows our level of consistency. That is difficult to achieve in any sport. Yeah, something that we are really pleased with. But at the end of the day it’s just another Grand Slam title that we are trying to fight to win.  Whether it’s the 10th or whatever number, you know, we still enjoy it, still appreciate it. Obviously, we are not stopping here. We are going for more.
