Bernarda Pera def. Heather Watson 6-1 3-6 6-3
It was not to be for Heather Watson as once more a first round win eludes her at the Western & Southern Open. It was a tough start for the Brit who found herself going down two breaks in the first set to Bernarda Pera as she struggled with her serve and the quick tempo of the courts.
But as sure as Pera had been in the first set, the errors started to rack up as Watson broke early in the second set and started to look a lot more settled in her game. She did not have to do too much to close out the set as Pera looked to have lost her grip on her game.
Predictably we were set for a bit of a rollercoaster as the pair traded breaks a couple of times, and Watson will most likely rue her chance to edge ahead for a 4-3 lead. Pera made no mistake in her next game, taking her break point chance before going on to serve out for the match.
Watson has only been in the main draw once before, and has yet to advance at this event, but is in the doubles and obviously will continue to stay in the New York bubble ahead of the US Open, where again she is yet to advance past the first round.
Play continues at the Western & Southern Open at 11am (4pm BST).
