[1] Iga Swiatek
Best Result: Champion (2022)
After claiming Poland’s first ever medal in Olympic tennis, Swiatek will be hoping to add a second US Open title to her resume.
Swiatek’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)
- R1: Kamilla Rakhimova [LL] | H2H: First Meeting
- R2: Daria Saville | H2H: Swiatek leads 2-0
- R3: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova [25] | H2H: Swiatek leads 1-0
- R4: Liudmila Samsonova [16] | H2H: Swiatek leads 3-0
- QF: Jessica Pegula [6] | H2H: Swiatek leads 6-3
- SF: Elena Rybakina [4] | H2H: Rybakina leads 4-2
- F: Aryna Sabalenka [2] | H2H: Swiatek leads 8-4
The world number one can ease her way into the tournament with a relatively comfortable opening week with very winnable matches. However that evens out when you look at the second week for Swiatek who could start week two with a Cincinnati rematch against Mirra Andreeva in the last 16. Two of tennis’ brightest starts had an epic in Ohio with Swiatek edging to victory and the duo could meet again. Then Swiatek could meet either Danielle Collins or Montreal champion Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals. Given Swiatek’s form and the pace of the courts in New York it wouldn’t be too surprising if the Pole went out before the semi-final stage but Swiatek has a talent for silencing the doubters on the world’s biggest stages. Besides with the expectations and pressure slightly lower than usual, that could favour Swiatek and see her raise her level when necessary.
[2] Aryna Sabalenka
Best Result: Final (2023)
Sabalenka has hit form at the right time as she enters the final Grand Slam of the season having won Cincinnati and will now aim to go one better than she did last year in New York.
Sabalenka’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)
- R1: Priscilla Hon [Q] | H2H: First Meeting
- R2: Lulu Sun | H2H: First Meeting
- R3: Ekaterina Alexandrova [29] | H2H: Tied at 3-3
- R4: Madison Keys [14] | H2H: Sabalenka leads 3-1
- QF: Qinwen Zheng [7] | H2H: Sabalenka leads 2-0
- SF: Coco Gauff [3] | H2H: Gauff leads 4-3
- F: Iga Swiatek [1] | H2H: Swiatek leads 8-4
Sabalenka will aim to stop Wimbledon hero Lulu Sun in her tracks in the second round with another potential banana skin opponent in the third round in the form of Ekaterina Alexandrova. Madison Keys will offer a substantial threat to Sabalenka in the last 16 before most likely facing Olympic gold medallist Qinwen Zheng in the quarter-finals. Overall it’s a good draw for Sabalenka as she bids for a first US Open title and has the form to back up her favouritism status.

[3] Coco Gauff
Best Result: Champion (2023)
Gauff is aiming to successfully defend her US Open title but enters this year’s tournament with poor form and a lack of confidence.
Gauff’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)
- R1: Varvara Gracheva | H2H: Gauff leads 1-0
- R2: Tatjana Maria | H2H: Gauff leads 1-0
- R3: Elina Svitolina [27] | H2H: Tied at 1-1
- R4: Emma Navarro [13] | H2H: Tied at 1-1
- QF: Barbora Krejcikova [8] | H2H: Krejcikova leads 1-0
- SF: Aryna Sabalenka [3] | H2H: Gauff leads 4-3
- F: Iga Swiatek [1] | H2H: Swiatek leads 11-1
Gauff has got some awkward opponents in the first week of the US Open with Tatjana Maria and Elina Svitolina expected to test the American’s confidence. In the last 16 Gauff could face compatriot Emma Navarro, who beat Gauff at Wimbledon this Summer before a potential quarter-final with Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova. If Gauff can regain her confidence then she should set up a semi-final blockbuster with Sabalenka but whether she gets given the opportunity to do that remains to be seen.
[4] Elena Rybakina
Best Result: Third Round (2021, 2023)
Rybakina will aim to boost her dismal record at the US Open but form hasn’t been kind to the Kazakh this season.
Rybakina’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)
- R1: Destanee Aiava [Q] | H2H: First Meeting
- R2: Elise Mertens | H2H: Mertens leads 1-0
- R3: Caroline Garcia [28] | H2H: Rybakina leads 2-0
- R4: Anna Kalinskaya [15] | H2H: Rybakina leads 3-2
- QF: Jasmine Paolini [5] | H2H: Tied at 2-2
- SF: Iga Swiatek [1] | H2H: Rybakina leads 4-2
- F: Aryna Sabalenka [2] | H2H: Sabalenka leads 6-3
Rybakina should cruise through the opening week although a potential match against Caroline Wozniacki could await in the third round, who always performs well at the US Open. In the quarter-finals a variety of opponents could await for the Kazakh with Jasmine Paolini, Bianca Andreescu, Naomi Osaka and Leylah Fernandez all lurking in that section in the draw. Form suggests Rybakina is far from considered being favourite to go all the way but maybe that’s when Rybakina plays her best tennis.
The US Open begins on the 26th of August and concludes on the eighth of September.
