Playing Styles and Prediction
The world number one’s dominance on hard courts continues as Sinner is into a second Grand Slam final of his career.
Sinner has been able to continue his momentum from winning the title in Cincinnati as the Italian is aiming to end the Grand Slam season just like he started it and that’s by claiming a Grand Slam title on hard courts.
Speaking ahead of his second Grand Slam final, Sinner reflected on his journey to the US Open final as well as talking about the wrist injury that he suffered against Draper in the semi-final.
“We went just day by day, really, with not so many expectations, trying to find my game, trying to find our rhythm,” Sinner told the US Open website.
“I started off the first day losing the first set [against McDonald]. I was set and break down going through that one. Just trying to find confidence throughout the days. We practiced very hard in the days in between, trying to prepare each match in the best possible way.
“The physio loosened it up very fast on court, so after I felt okay. It went away by playing, which is good. Let’s see how it is tomorrow when it’s cold. It’s going to be a different feeling. Hopefully, it’s nothing to be concerned about.”
Next for Sinner is first time Grand Slam finalist Fritz who became the first male American since Andy Roddick in 2006 to reach the US Open final.
After winning Masters 1000 titles and achieving new career high rankings, Fritz is now hoping to achieve his childhood dream and win a Grand Slam title on home soil.
Speaking ahead of the final, Fritz admitted reaching the US Open final was a dream come true and spoke about his confidence levels ahead of the final.
“It’s such a lifelong dream come true. Something I’ve worked my whole life for to be in this situation. I think just kind of like realising that got me a little bit choked up,” Fritz was quoted by the ATP website as saying.
“It’s just joy, the crowd cheering and kind of that realisation, like ‘Wow, I’m in the finals of the US Open. It’s just kind of like how I am. I’m more of an emotional person when I’m happy. When I’m really happy I cry at happy endings of movies and not at sad stuff. That’s kind of just how I am.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing him. To be honest, I don’t think that I’m going to be put in a more stressful situation than I was today than playing in a final. I think today was much more stressful for me than playing the final. I just feel good.
“I have a feeling I’m going to come out and play really well and win. When I play good tennis, I think that level is good enough to win.”
Sinner will continue to be clinical on serve and return as he will be hoping to have more consistency on the forehand than he did in his semi-final.
Meanwhile Fritz will need to be aggressive on serve as he will target the Sinner backhand as the American will look to finish off points at the net.
Both players will be nervous as this is a big occasion for both men in completely different ways with history on the line.
Sinner should have enough quality to win his second Grand Slam title but Fritz will feel that he has a good chance at winning this match if the Italian isn’t at his best.
Prediction: Sinner in five sets.
