Katie Boulter [31] def. Aliaksandra Sasnovich [Q] 5-7 6-2 6-1

British No. 1 Katie Boulter had to battle hard to earn her spot in the second round of the US Open, despite starting strongly with a break. Aliaksandra Sasnovich’s counter-punching tested Boulters improved movement as she Belarusian went toe-to-toe with the Brit to draw level and eventually turn the set around to lead.

Boulter did not let her head drop, jumping out to an early lead in the second set, and holding on to force the decider. Sasnovich continued to press forcing Boulter to save four break points in the third set opening game but five games on the spin saw Boulter seal her berth n the second round.

Boulter could well have another fight on her hands. She trails Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in all but break points saved and overall service points won. Although she only reached a couple of second rounds in the lead up tournaments, Bouzas Maneiro has cut her teeth on qualifying battles.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Boulter showed she has not lost any of her fighting spirit as she found a way to get past Sasnovich, but Bouzas Maneiro had the distinction of beating then reigning champion Marketa Vondrousa in Wimbledon this year. She has been adept at coming through tough three setters in Cincinnati and Cleveland, so Boulter will have to look to dictate from the start. Bouzas Maneiro relishes hitting freely against higher-ranked players, so there will be no element of hoping that she runs out of steam.

The Spaniard is solid off both wings and has stamina to see her through lungbusting matches, but Boulter’s experience should see her through but she will need her serve to be firing far more effectively and consistently that it did In the first round.

Prediction: Boulter in three sets.
