Iga Swiatek’s bid for a second US Open keeps getting stronger with each round as the world number one produced another impressive performance to defeat Liudmila Samsonova. After a tricky start to the tournament, Swiatek has cruised through the draw as she hasn’t faced break point since the opening round. Now the Roland Garros champion will hope to keep her composure and high level as she seeks a sixth Grand Slam title and continues to show why she is the best player in the world on any surface.
A big test awaits Swiatek in the quarter-finals as she takes on the in-form Jessica Pegula, who will feel her time to achieve a Grand Slam breakthrough is now. The American has had a sensational build-up to her home Grand Slam having won the title in Toronto and then backed that up by reaching the final in Cincinnati. Pegula has never been better placed to break her Grand Slam quarter-final curse as her consistency, accuracy and aggressive play has been rewarded in the second half of the season. Now entering her seventh Grand Slam quarter-final, Pegula will hope this year’s US Open is the place where she can reach her first semi-final at Grand Slam level.
Swiatek will aim to be aggressive on serve as she will force Pegula behind the baseline as she will use angles to create space on the court. Meanwhile Pegula will aim to bring the match to Swiatek as she will aim to soak up pressure and be aggressive off the shorter balls in order to take the match to the world number one. This will be a competitive match with both players playing some of their best tennis at the moment with this match expected to be defined by fine margins.
Prediction: Swiatek in three sets.

Jannik Sinner produced his most impressive performance of the tournament as the Italian defeated Tommy Paul in straight sets. It was a performance that showed why Sinner is the favourite to win a first US Open title as he held his nerve under pressure in the tiebreaks to prevail and reach the quarter-finals. The world number one has continued the form that saw him win the title in Cincinnati and now will be aiming to capitalize on an opportunistic draw in order to reach a first US Open semi-final.
A massive challenge awaits Sinner in the quarter-finals as he takes on former champion Daniil Medvedev in the last eight. Once again Medvedev has gone under the radar and it has meant that Medvedev has played his best tennis as he is only dropped 25 games in his last three rounds. The world number three caused a big shock by knocking out Carlos Alcaraz at last year’s US Open and will now look to do the same this year as he bids for a second Grand Slam title.
Sinner will aim to dictate on his forehand as he will use drop shots to force Medvedev into the net with the Italian looking to expose Medvedev’s court positioning. Meanwhile Medvedev will produce deep and attacking returning in order to rush Sinner’s game. They have had two five set thrillers at Grand Slams this season and another high quality match is expected in New York with very little separating the two players heading into this blockbuster match.
Prediction: Medvedev in five sets.
Beatriz Haddad Maia [22] v Karolina Muchova H2H & Match Fundamentals
Beatriz Haddad Maia [22] v Karolina Muchova | H2H: Muchova leads 3-0 |

After struggling for form over the last few months, Beatriz Haddad Maia is back to playing her best tennis as the Brazilian is into the quarter-finals. The 22nd seed overcame former finalist Caroline Wozniacki and now has an opportunity to reach her second Grand Slam semi-final. The question remains whether Haddad Maia has the stability and consistency to go all the way in a Grand Slam but one thing is certain is that the Brazilian has the all-round game to produce big results.
Next for Haddad Maia is Karolina Muchova after the Czech Republican moved into the quarter-finals by defeating Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. Muchova produced creative and inspiring tennis as she prevented Paolini from having the chance to reach her third consecutive Grand Slam final. When on form Muchova is one of the best players in the world and the Czech Republican has another chance to prove that as she looks to reach a second consecutive US Open semi-final.
The serve will be crucial for Haddad Maia as she will look to be aggressive on serve and force shorter balls from Muchova. Meanwhile Muchova’s slice and forehand is expected to do most of the damage as she looks to finish points off at the net. Although Haddad Maia has had a good tournament, Muchova’s creativity should prove too strong here.
Prediction: Muchova in straight sets.
