NEW YORK, USA – Iga Swiatek and Daniil Medvedev continue their quest for a second US Open title as they take on tricky third round tests on day six of the last Grand Slam of the year.

World number one Iga Swiatek continued her quest for a second US Open title with a dominant victory over Ena Shibahara. The Pole had a very awkward start to the tournament but seems to be playing better as the tournament goes on and will be boosted by the fact that on paper Swiatek isn’t the favourite to win the US Open. That means Swiatek can play with freedom and without pressure which is when the world number one plays her best tennis. Now the Pole aims to reach the second week in New York for a fourth consecutive year.
The next obstacle for Swiatek to overcome is former Roland Garros finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. After a poor season, the world number 27 picked up her form in Cincinnati and has carried the momentum into the US Open. Pavlyuchenkova has the experience and the game to test any top player as she can be streaky especially at Grand Slams. The 33 year-old will enter this match knowing that a win over the world number one could boost her form for the rest of the season and act as a platform to achieve bigger things.
Swiatek will look to neutralize Pavlyuchenkova’s accurate returning by serving aggressively and taking the forehand as early as possible. Meanwhile Pavlyuchenkova will aim to push Swiatek behind the baseline by using depth and will look to force the shorter ball in order to finish points off at the net. This could be a testing match for Swiatek but the Pole should have too much quality and variety for Pavlyuchenkova in this match.
Prediction: Swiatek in straight sets.
Daniil Medvedev [5] v Flavio Cobolli [31] H2H & Match Fundamentals

After a traumatic defeat in the final of the Australian Open at the start of the year, it’s safe to say Daniil Medvedev has had an inconsistent season. However the former US Open champion can never be underestimated when it comes to hard court tennis as last year proved when he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals in New York. The fifth seed plays his best tennis under the radar and is once again not being talked about as a top contender for the title. Now Medvedev once again looks to prove everyone wrong as his quest for a second Grand Slam title continues.
Standing in Medvedev’s way of a place in the second week is rising star Flavio Cobolli. The Italian has made major improvements this season and finds himself being seeded for a Grand Slam having started the year at 101 in the world. A dynamic game mixed with solid defensive skills means Cobolli is a tough player to beat and now the Italian aims to cause a big upset at a Grand Slam to complete his breakthrough season.
Medvedev will aim to be consistently aggressive on serve as he will use the forehand to test Cobolli’s defensive skills. Meanwhile Cobolli will need to be proactive on the forehand side as he will aim to punish any weak second serves from the former champion. This will be a tight contest with Cobolli expected to give Medvedev his first test of the tournament. However Medvedev should have too much tactical depth for Cobolli as he bids for a place in the last 16.
Prediction: Medvedev in four sets.
Jasmine Paolini [5] v Yulia Putintseva [30] H2H & Match Fundamentals
Jasmine Paolini [5] v Yulia Putintseva [30] | H2H: Paolini leads 1-0 |
US Open 2024 | New York, USA |
Hard (O) | Prize Money: $215,000 |

It’s been an incredible season for Jasmine Paolini as the Italian is bidding to reach her third consecutive Grand Slam final. The Italian reached back-to-back finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon which was then topped off by winning Olympic gold in the doubles alongside Sara Errani. Now the fifth seed has her eyes set on more glory in New York as her compact yet effective game is hoping to reap its rewards on a third different surface.
A stern test awaits Paolini as the Italian takes on the in-form Yulia Putintseva. The Kazakh has been rejuvenated this season with Putintseva consistently reaching the latter stages of tournaments. After a very good grass court season which included a Birmingham title and reaching the second week at Wimbledon, Putintseva now aims to capitalize on the momentum by producing another deep Grand Slam run at the US Open.
Paolini will look to be aggressive on serve as she will use depth to force Putintseva behind the baseline as the Italian will aim to finish points off at the net. Meanwhile Putintseva will use the backhand to create angles on the court as she will aim to rush Paolini’s baseline game. This will be a big test for Paolini but the Italian’s consistent power should get her through this match.
Prediction: Paolini in three sets.
