Emotions were running high for Caroline Wozniacki as the Dane produced the biggest win of her comeback so far by defeating Petra Kvitova. Wozniacki’s athleticism and tactical awareness was on show as the former Australian Open champion now has her eyes set on the second week after proving she can still beat some of the best players in the world. As belief remains high, Wozniacki will hope her best tennis is yet to come as she looks to elevate her level over the next week.
Before thinking about the second week, Wozniacki will need to overcome a former Grand Slam finalist in Jennifer Brady with the American producing a successful comeback of her own. The American has had a nightmare last couple of years with a bad knee injury but has made a successful comeback having tested Elena Rybakina in Canada as well as beating Magda Linette at the US Open. Now Brady will look to continue to bring her best tennis on the biggest stages as she aims to reach the last 16 in New York for the third time.
Wozniacki will look to test Brady’s fitness and defensive skills by producing deep shots and using her athleticism to cover the ground quickly as well as hitting tight angles on the backhand side. Meanwhile Brady will look to maintain a high first serve percentage and use her forehand to dictate the tempo of the match. This is a golden opportunity for both players but one that neither player will be too disappointed about should they lose. In the end Wozniacki’s fitness and experience may just edge her through a tight third round match.
Prediction: Wozniacki in three sets.
Tommy Paul [14] v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina [21] H2H & Match Fundamentals
Tommy Paul [14] v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina [21] | H2H: Paul leads 2-0 |
US Open 2023 | New York, USA |
Hard (O) | Prize Money: $191,000 |
First on Arthur Ashe Stadium at 12pm (5pm BST) | Sky/Now TV Subscription Required |
Tommy Paul entered the US Open in good form having reached the semi-finals in Toronto, beating Carlos Alcaraz along the way. However the American survived a big scare in his last round as he came back from two sets down to defeat Roman Safiullin in five sets. Paul has often gone under the radar when it comes to the future of American tennis but the 14th seed seems to have the highest amount of potential and now looks to back that up with a deep Grand Slam run in his home country.
Standing in Paul’s way is charismatic Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who is yet to drop a set at the US Open so far. Just like Paul, Davidovich Fokina produced an impressive run to the Toronto semi-finals before a retirement against Novak Djokovic in Cincinnati ensured there was a setback to his preparations to the US Open. However the Spaniard has shown no signs of slowing down and will hope he can continue to be aggressive as he looks for a place in the last 16 in New York for the third time in his career.
Paul will look to maintain a high percentage of first serves and accelerate the tempo of the rallies with his backhand. Meanwhile Davidovich Fokina will look to use depth and variety to catch the American off-guard as he looks to test Paul’s defensive skills. This is a match between two players who love a long match and who can play aggressive as well as passive tennis. In the end Paul’s tactical quality should prove too much for the erratic Spaniard.
Prediction: Paul in five sets.

Karolina Muchova [10] v Taylor Townsend H2H & Match Fundamentals
Karolina Muchova [10] v Taylor Townsend | H2H: First Meeting |
US Open 2023 | New York, USA |
Hard (O) | Prize Money: $191,000 |
First on Louis Armstrong Stadium at 11am (4pm BST) | Sky/Now TV Subscription Required |
Karolina Muchova has done well to keep the momentum going after her run to the Roland Garros as she enters the US Open in fine form. After testing Iga Swiatek in Canada, the Czech Republican reached the final in Cincinnati as she produced a high level of tennis which included a win over Aryna Sabalenka. Now Muchova will look to maintain her aggression and variety as she searches for a place in the last 16.
The next obstacle for Muchova is Taylor Townsend who is feeling rejuvenated after having a long spell on the sidelines. The American has come back from many setbacks stronger than ever before as she continues to have success not only in singles but in doubles as well. That was evident in the last round when Townsend battled past Beatriz Haddad Maia and now the American looks to add another upset to her collection as she looks to take advantage of her high level of confidence.
Muchova will look to use a variety of power and slice to open up the angles to force Townsend into erratic errors. Meanwhile the American will look to be consistent from the baseline as she looks to use depth and pace to catch Muchova off guard. This is a match between two in-form and confident players but Muchova’s higher level of play on serve, should give her an edge here.
Prediction: Muchova in three sets.
