Andrey Rublev is hoping the US Open is the tournament where he finally fulfils his Grand Slam potential. The eighth seed has been consistent at Grand Slam tournaments but has never really had the general quality to go all the way to a final with there being other players who have been more emotionally controlled and are able to expose Rublev’s weaknesses better. Now after his opening round win, Rublev is looking to keep building momentum and consistency as he looks to finally make an impact when it matters most.
A tough second round match awaits Rublev in the form of a rejuvenated Gael Monfils who returned from injury last month. The Frenchman has been on a superb run of form having beaten the likes of Cameron Norrie, Alex De Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the build-up to the US Open. Monfils’ explosive power and energy is still unpredictable and difficult to break down as he looks to prove he has one more deep Grand Slam run left in him. The question is will Monfils’ body hold up in order for him to cause one more big upset?
Rublev will look to serve accurately well as he looks to be aggressive from the forehand side but redirect Monfils’ power with his backhand. Meanwhile Monfils looks to use his agility and explosive power to make Rublev move around the court, exposing open space on the court to hit winners into. This will be a highly entertaining contest but Rublev should have too much consistency for Monfils especially given the best of five set format.
Prediction: Rublev in five sets.
Daria Kasatkina [13] v Sofia Kenin H2H & Match Fundamentals
Daria Kasatkina [13] v Sofia Kenin | H2H: First Meeting |
US Open 2023 | New York, USA |
Hard (O) | Prize Money: $123,000 |
First night session on Louis Armstrong Stadium, not before 7pm (Midnight, 1 September BST) | Sky/Now TV Subscription Required |
Daria Kasatkina has had a consistent season but would love nothing more than to finish her season with a deep Grand Slam run. The 13th seed had to work hard in her three set win over talented American Alycia Parks as Kasatkina will be looking to add more aggression to her game as the tournament progresses. Now with her draw slowly opening up, Kasatkina will look to take advantage and continue the momentum in New York.
Standing in Kasatkina’s way is former Grand Slam champion Sofia Kenin, who has had a couple of good wins but ultimately has lacked consistent quality to make any deep runs at any tournament. The American’s win over Ana Bogdan will look to give Kenin some confidence with the world number 101 now looking to rediscover the form that saw her become a consistent contender for Grand Slams. Can the American become inspired in front of her home crowd?
Kasatkina will look to use slice to create the short ball from Kenin which will allow her to be aggressive especially on the forehand side. Meanwhile Kenin will look to create depth on the backhand side to neutralise Kasatkina’s power as she looks the angles to hit effective winners. This will be a tactically intriguing match but Kasatkina’s depth in shot-making and variety should prove too much here.
Prediction: Kasatkina in three sets.
Jannik Sinner [6] v Lorenzo Sonego H2H & Match Fundamentals
Jannik Sinner [6] v Lorenzo Sonego | H2H: Sinner leads 2-0 |
US Open 2023 | New York, USA |
Hard (O) | Prize Money: $123,000 |
First on Louis Armstrong Stadium at 11am (4pm BST) | Sky/Now TV Subscription Required |
After winning his maiden Masters 1000 title in Toronto, Jannik Sinner has now more expectation on his shoulders than ever before. The Italian is at a point where he must start competing for Grand Slam titles and there is no better place to do than in the fast and electric conditions of New York. The question remains whether Sinner can hold his nerve to claim a historic Grand Slam title.
The next test for Sinner is compatriot Lorenzo Sonego, who has gained some really good wins over the last few months but has ultimately lacked the consistency to get the results needed. Sonego has a big serve and a mix of power and depth from the baseline as he is a master at varying the pace of rallies. Now Sonego looks to gain some confidence ahead of the rest of the season as he looks to improve his ranking.
Sinner will look to dominate through his forehand as he looks to use angles to neutralise Sonego’s variety. Meanwhile Sonego will look to extend the rallies as he looks to test the sixth seed’s patience and durability. This should be a good second round test for Sinner but ultimately the sixth seed should prevail.
Prediction: Sinner in straight sets.
