Best Result: Fourth Round (2021)

Swiatek is looking to win her third grand slam title and her first outside the Roland Garros but enters the last grand slam of the year in shaky form.

Swiatek’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Jasmine Paolini | H2H: Swiatek leads 1-0
  • R2: Sloane Stephens | H2H: Swiatek leads 1-0
  • R3: Ekaterina Alexandrova [28] | H2H: Alexandrova leads 1-0
  • R4: Jelena Ostapenko [16] | H2H: Ostapenko leads 3-0
  • QF: Jessica Pegula [8] | H2H: Swiatek leads 2-1
  • SF: Paula Badosa [4] | H2H: Tied at 1-1
  • F: Anett Kontaveit [2] | H2H: Swiatek leads 3-2

It’s a tricky draw for the world number one with former champion Sloane Stephens providing a tough test early on. In the fourth round Jelena Ostapenko could cause the Pole some problems as their head-to-head shows or potentially the in-form Amanda Anisimova could also provide an upset. Should Swiatek reach the quarter-finals then it will show she’s in-form and then it’s bad news for the rest of the competition as that usually means she is a certain to lift the trophy on the second Saturday.

Best Results: Fourth Round (2015, 2020)

Kontaveit has found some of her form and fitness back in recent months but still has a long way to go to be a grand slam contender as her results in Toronto and Cincinnati show.

Kontaveit’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Jaqueline Cristian | H2H: First Meeting
  • R2: Danka Kovinic | H2H: Kovinic leads 1-0
  • R3: Martina Trevisan [27] | H2H: Kontaveit leads 2-0
  • R4: Leylah Fernandez [14] | H2H: First Meeting
  • QF: Ons Jabeur [5] | H2H: Tied at 3-3
  • SF: Maria Sakkari [3] | H2H: Kontaveit leads 7-6
  • F: Iga Swiatek [1] | H2H: Swiatek leads 3-3

A very tough draw awaits Kontaveit as Serena Williams, Karolina Muchova and Ajla Tomljanovic could all await in the opening week. After that there are players like Daria Kasatkina and Shelby Rogers who will fancy their chances given their recent form while Leylah Fernandez will hope to produce a performance like last year and cause an upset. Overall Kontaveit will need to be playing her best tennis every match to stand a chance of winning the tournament.

Best Result: Semi-Finals (2021)

Sakkari is looking to find her confidence at the place she reached the semi-finals after a tough few months.

Sakkari’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Tatjana Maria | H2H: Maria leads 1-0
  • R2: Xiyu Wang | H2H: First Meeting
  • R3: Alison Riske-Armitraj [29] | H2H: First Meeting
  • R4: Beatriz Haddad Maia [15] | H2H: Haddad Maia leads 3-0
  • QF: Simona Halep [7] | H2H: Sakkari leads 1-0
  • SF: Anett Kontaveit [2] | H2H: Kontaveit leads 7-6
  • F: Iga Swiatek [1] | H2H: Sakkari leads 3-2

It’s a draw of nightmares for Sakkari straight from the first round with Tatjana Maria beating the Greek during the German’s incredible US Open run. The likes of Beatriz Haddad Maia and Caroline Garcia can boast recent wins over Sakkari and will be confident about ending the run of the Greek here. Simona Halep poses the toughest quarter-final possible and the Romanian is on a collision course to achieve her New York dream. If Sakkari wants to win the US Open she is going to have to play lights out tennis from the first match.

Best Result: Second Round (2021)

Badosa will look to rediscover her form after a couple of tough losses in Toronto and Cincinnati as she aims to make her grand slam breakthrough.

Badosa’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Lesia Tsurenko | First Meeting
  • R2: Petra Martic | H2H: Tied at 1-1
  • R3: Victoria Azarenka [26] | H2H: Tied at 1-1
  • R4: Belinda Bencic [13] | H2H: Badosa leads 3-1
  • QF: Aryna Sabalenka [6] | H2H: Badosa leads 2-1
  • SF: Iga Swiatek [1] | H2H: Tied at 1-1
  • F: Anett Kontaveit [2] | H2H: Kontaveit leads 1-0

Badosa has got a favourable draw with their being a chance for her to play herself into the tournament. Belinda Bencic will possess a stern test in the last 16 but other than that this will be seen as a good opportunity for the Spaniard to make a statement in New York.

The US Open takes place on the 29 August and concludes on the 11 September.
