Another late night finish and another heroic display from Serena Williams as the American rolled back the years to defeat Anett Kontaveit in three sets. The American’s will to win and desire to finish her career off in style means that the 23-time Grand Slam champion will be very difficult to beat in front of her home fans. Williams insists she has nothing to lose and if that is the case then she may be in the most dangerous form since she returned to the tour.
The next task for Williams will be Ajla Tomljanovic who has been very consistent over the last couple of years and has improved her form over the Grand Slams. Tomljanovic’s opening round win over Karolina Muchova proves that the Australian is in the most consistent form of her career and would love nothing more than to score one of the biggest victories of her career in New York.
Tomljanovic will need to be consistently aggressive and not overcommit on her court positioning otherwise this match could be over quickly. Williams will look to continue to find a consistent level on return and continue to hit her spots on serve. It will be an intriguing match-up but one Williams should win if she’s playing her best tennis.
Prediction: Williams in three sets.

Pablo Carreno Busta had to hold his nerve against charismatic Kazakh Alexander Bublik in order to make the third round. Having won his maiden ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal a few weeks ago, the Spaniard will believe that this is his time to go deep once again in New York and make a massive breakthrough. A big serve and an aggressive game, Carreno Busta will look to show that consistency and patience can translate into results as he looks to make the second week.
Next for Carreno Busta is Alex De Minaur with the Australian avenging his Wimbledon loss to Cristian Garin in the last round. De Minaur always seems to bring his best tennis at the US Open and this year seems to be no different as he looks to finally produce a deep run here in New York. Can De Minaur finally deliver his potential this week?
This is a match between two in-form players who know how to turn defence into attack and know how to be consistent when it matters most. This match may be won on the serve and at the moment Carreno Busta has the most confidence heading into this match but this will be an entertaining contest that will certainly go all the way.
Prediction: Carreno Busta in four sets.
Ons Jabeur [5] v Shelby Rogers [31] H2H & Match Fundamentals

Ons Jabeur is on a mission to win her first Grand Slam title and is continuing to show why she is so consistent. It’s now 40 wins on the tour this season for the Tunisian and she will look to draw on her experiences of losing the Wimbledon final, to get another deep run. Now with two of the top three seeds out of the tournament, Jabeur will believe now is her time to breakthrough.
A tricky test awaits in the next round though as Jabeur faces Shelby Rogers for a place in the second week. Rogers has beaten the likes of Maria Sakkari, Amanda Anisimova and Bianca Andreescu already this US hard court season and will believe another upset is in her sight. The power and precision mixed with effortless composure will see the American not only a threat to Jabeur but the rest of the draw as she looks to be inspired by her home crowd.
Rogers will look to find effective point construction and aggression if she wants to draw unforced errors from Jabeur and come through this match. The Tunisian’s form and confidence says that she should get through this match but this will be far from easy.
Prediction: Jabeur in three sets.
