Daniil Medvedev’s confident start to the US Open continued on Friday as he comfortably defeated Chinese qualifier Yibing Wu. The world number one is playing his best tennis but will know he has another level that he can go to if required. Medvedev is looking to become the first player since Roger Federer in 2008 to defend his men’s singles title in New York and a win on Sunday will take him one step close to his goal.

However Medvedev’s goal will go through a severe test in the last 16 as he takes on the in-form Nick Kyrgios. Despite talking about his fatigue and desperation to go back to Australia, Kyrgios has continued his red-hot form into the US Open where he is yet to lose a set. Having been so close at Wimbledon to achieving his Grand Slam dream, Kyrgios will be motivated to do the same in New York and end his year with a high.

Kyrgios showed he can match Medvedev’s level in Montreal when he defeated the world number one in Montreal and serving well will be the key once again to pulling off the upset. However Medvedev has shown that he has improved since that match and is playing some inspired tennis at the moment as the Russian’s defence will make it tough for Kyrgios to implement attacking tennis. It should be a thrilling match but Medvedev may just use his experience to edge this one.

Prediction: Medvedev in four sets.

It was a landmark win for Ons Jabeur over Shelby Rogers as the Tunisian has now reached the second week at all four Grand Slams. Jabeur has her sights set on a Grand Slam title now after being so close to achieving her life-long ambition at Wimbledon. The fifth seed’s unique style offence with a mix of slice and power will see her as a threat as she looks to be the one to test Iga Swiatek’s resolve in New York.

Before thinking about the final, Jabeur will have to overcome one of the more trickier opponents she will face in Veronika Kudermetova. Kudermetova has had another consistent season and all the Russian is missing from her collection is a run to a big title with the 18th seed looking to make her breakthrough in New York. Now the Russian looks to make her second consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final with a big win.

This will be a tough test for Jabeur as has proven in the past with Kudermetova’s consistent power over-powering the Tunisian’s slice in the past. The faster conditions will suit the Russian and if she can get an aggressive start then it could be another tricky day at the office for the fifth seed.

Prediction: Kudermetova in three sets.

Pablo Carreno Busta continued his good form as he comfortably defeated Alex De Minaur to send a statement that he’s a dark horse for the title. The Spaniard is in confident form and there won’t be too many players left in the draw who will fancy their chances against him right now. Can the Spaniard now hold his nerve to reach the quarter-finals in New York again?

Standing in Carreno Busta’s way is big-hitting Russian Karen Khachanov who benefited from a Jack Draper retirement to reach the second week in New York. Khachanov has played some solid and consistent tennis so far in this tournament and will fancy his chances of reaching the last eight here. Khachanov will now look to fulfil his potential after having disappointing campaigns in the past.

This should be a good test for Carreno Busta as Khachanov’s power will test the Spaniard’s defensive skills. However the Spaniard’s consistency and confidence should be too strong for the Russian as he looks to book a spot in the last eight.

Prediction: Carreno Busta in four sets.
