Dan Evans eased into the second round of the US Open after a dominant victory over Jiri Vesely. The Brit dictated the tempo of the match from the very start as he used a mixture of slice and power to force the errors from the big-serving Czech Republican. Vesely saved four break points in the opening game with some big serves and aggressive play. Eventually though Evans did get his break with some smart angles as he broke in the third game for a 2-1 lead.

The 20th seed didn’t just impress on return as he didn’t concede a single break point opportunity in the match as he lured Vesely into the net, where he set up powerful passing shot winners. Vesely managed to save two more break points in the ninth game but was only delaying the inevitable as Evans closed out the opening set to 30 and gained a one set lead.

From then on Evans took control as he produced some sensational point construction to secure two quick breaks to love as he took a 4-1 lead. Vesely tried his best to outpower Evans from the back of the court but the world number 68 ran out of ideas and energy as he conceded the second set in 33 minutes.

The final set was just as quick with Vesely looking physically fatigued in the hot New York sun, which was the opposite of how Evans was feeling as the Brit chased down every ball. Evans converted both his break points and comfortably closed out the match to seal his place in the second round.

Playing Styles and Prediction

Duckworth has notched up some wins in recent months after recently returning to the tour. The Australian is known for being aggressive on serve and solid on return as Duckworth looks to be inside the top world 50 by the end of the year.

Evans will look to continue to serve well and get the first strike in with Duckworth looking to test Evans’ defensive skills early on. If the Brit can continue his tactical variety and confidence from the baseline then this should be a fairly straightforward victory as Evans looks to continue his red-hot form.

Prediction: Evans in straight sets.
