Carlos Alcaraz’s dreams of being world number one are still alive after an epic five set victory over Marin Cilic. The Spaniard produced high quality tennis and mental fortitude to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open for a second consecutive year. Alcaraz is now arguably the favourite to claim his first Grand Slam title and become the new world number one but the third seed will know that he can’t be complacent at this stage of the tournament as he looks to create history.

Next for Alcaraz is Jannik Sinner who has beaten the Spaniard twice already this season on two different surfaces. The Italian has survived a couple of five set matches already in this tournament and has passed some physical tests. Now Sinner looks to use his power to overcome the quarter-final hurdle at Grand Slams and reach his first semi-final at this level as he looks to match his potential.

This will be a battle from start to finish with both players having to overcome psychological factors. For Alcaraz it’s the ability to have lost twice in recent times to Sinner with the Italian having to overcome the fact that he has lost all three Grand Slam quarter-finals he has been involved with. Both players will ensure that this is a test of physical and tactical skillset with the winner likely to be the favourite to win their first Grand Slam title.

Prediction: Alcaraz in five sets.

Iga Swiatek’s search for a first US Open title had to go through a tough test from big-serving Jule Niemeier as she didn’t play her best tennis but did what champions do and found a way to win. Now the world number one is three wins away from her third Grand Slam title and capping off a dominant season in style. Can Swiatek find some consistency and continue to lead by example on the women’s tour.

Speaking of consistency, Swiatek’s next opponent is no strange to that concept with Jessica Pegula having another consistent year. The American’s consistently powerful baseline game was too much for Petra Kvitova as she cruised past the former Wimbledon champion and now looks for a big Grand Slam breakthrough in New York. All Pegula is missing from this season is a Grand Slam singles final and the American will believe that this week is the time to change that.

Swiatek will need to play much better than she did in her last match if she wants to make the semi-finals here. If the Pole can’t find her best tennis than Pegula will take advantage but the world number one has often problem solved her way to victory and she will be confident of doing the same here.

Prediction: Swiatek in three sets.

After a tough match against Denis Shapovalov, Andrey Rublev would have been relieved and very happy to have produced a performance like he did in his straight sets demolition against Cameron Norrie. Rublev has for so long carried expectation and potential with him to Grand Slam tournaments but never really threatened tennis’ elite for the biggest prize in the tournament. Now the Russian will look to take advantage of an open draw as he looks to make his Grand Slam breakthrough.

Speaking of breakthroughs, that’s exactly what Frances Tiafoe did on Monday night as he earned the biggest victory of his career by defeating Rafael Nadal. An emotional occasion for Tiafoe who is now looking to be consistent and continue his dream run in front of his fans. A big serve and unique groundstrokes, Tiafoe has promised so much and now he looks to deliver on his promises at the US Open.

This match will see power take on power after both players had to be more proactive and aggressive in their previous matches. Rublev has shown his mental resolve while Tiafoe has showed that he can play his best tennis when it really matters. It should be a fascinating contest that Rublev enters as marginal favourite.

Prediction: Rublev in five sets.

Aryna Sabalenka seems to have discovered her form at the US Open after an underwhelming season. The Belarusian has provided consistency, mental resolve and pure power from the baseline as she looks to fulfil her Grand Slam prophecy. Now the sixth seed looks to play her best tennis when it matters as she aims for success in the big apple.

Next for Sabalenka is another player who is hitting all the right notes recently in the New York empire in the form of Karolina Pliskova. The Czech Republican has the keys to go all the way at the US Open and her win over Victoria Azarenka proved why she is a former finalist in New York. Pliskova seems to be in the right state of mind to finally break her Grand Slam curse and a good performance on Wednesday could go along way to achieving her goal of Grand Slam glory.

Pray for the tennis balls in this match as both players will hit the ball hard and are at the top of their game with confidence at an all-time high. It will be the ultimate test for both players of holding their nerve and playing their best tennis when it really matters. Pliskova starts this match as slight favourite but this match could go all the way with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

Prediction: Pliskova in three sets.
