Carlos Alcaraz’s impressive victory over Federico Coria saw many onlookers suggest that this year could be Alcaraz’s time. The Spaniard has impressed once again this season, winning two Masters 1000 events and beating some of the best players in the world on a consistent basis. However the Spaniard is yet to prove his worth at the Grand Slams and now hopes he can change that in New York this year and go one step further than his quarter-final performance last year.
A tough task awaits in the next round in the form of talented American Jenson Brooksby. The American took out Cincinnati champion Borna Coric in the last round and has proved over this US hard court swing that he will be a tough player to beat in New York. Brooksby’s unique mix of defence and attack as well as his athletic movement sees him as a contender to go deep at his home Grand Slam and with confidence on his side, there is nothing to suggest that won’t be the case.
This should be a great match with both young and athletic players looking to implement their different game-styles on each other. This match could be a glimpse into a future rivalry with both players already making their mark in their young careers. Alcaraz’s higher level mixed with resilience should see him to victory here but this may go all the way.
Prediction: Alcaraz in five sets.
Garbine Muguruza [9] v Petra Kvitova [21] H2H & Match Fundamentals

Garbine Muguruza has had an underwhelming season so far but seems to playing her best tennis of the year in New York. The Spaniard’s opening round win over talented Dane Clara Tauson was a statement of intent to show that Muguruza is here to contend for the title. Now the former Wimbledon champion will look to show consistency that can lead her to a third Grand Slam title.
It won’t be easy for Muguruza as she plays fellow Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the next round. Kvitova has hit top form in recent months with a title in Eastbourne as well as reaching the final in Cincinnati just before coming to New York. However the Czech Republican hasn’t had a great record in Grand Slams recently and will be looking to improve that over the next couple of weeks.
This will be a big-hitting contest between two players who don’t know the meaning of defensive tennis. Muguruza will look to play big and take risks while Kvitova will look to do the same but use a lot more depth. This is a nightmare match tactically for the Spaniard and Kvitova should use her confidence to edge into the second week.
Prediction: Kvitova in three sets.
Andrey Rublev [9] v Denis Shapovalov [19] H2H & Match Fundamentals
Andrey Rublev [9] v Denis Shapovalov [19] | H2H: Tied at 2-2 |
US Open 2022 | New York, USA |
Hard (O) | Prize Money: $188,000 |

Andrey Rublev has struggled this season since a deep run at Roland Garros as he has struggled for consistency and has often been frustrated with his performances. However Rublev will hope that the US Open will be the start of an inspired rest of the year as he chases a spot at the ATP Finals in Turin.
Next for Rublev is another player who has struggled to get any momentum in the form of Denis Shapovalov. Since beating Rafael Nadal in Rome, Shapovalov has only won five matches on tour which is underwhelming given the Canadian’s potential. Now Shapovalov will look to make a big Grand Slam breakthrough and he is on track to do that given his performances so far in New York.
This will be a match full of attacking power with not much room for passive patterns of play. This match will be about who can control their emotions better as well as who can remain the most consistent this season. For both players this has been their kryptonite this season but this is the perfect match for Shapovalov to produce a surprise result against an underwhelming Rublev.
Prediction: Shapovalov in five sets.
