It’s been an underwhelming season for Madison Keys, a player who is so often talked about someone who can beat anyone on any given day. The American’s raw power makes it so hard to defend against but this season the 26-year-old has only won 10 matches. However reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon will give her belief that she can still perform on the big stages even if she has lost all three of her US Open series matches coming into the last grand slam of the season.
Keys will play good friend Sloane Stephens in the opening round, whose season has been just a little bit better than Keys. Stephens has showed some solid consistency since reaching the semi-finals in Parma but has failed to record any stand-out results on hard courts. Now with a different set-up in her coaching team, Stephens is looking to use her unique athleticism on the court to make another deep run at a grand slam.
Four years ago this was a US Open final, now this a grand slam first round match with both players being unseeded. It should be an entertaining match to start the US Open but as has been the case for most of their head-to-head, Stephens’ defensive skillset should be too good for Keys’ raw power.
Prediction: Stephens in three sets.

If there is one player that is a serious threat to Novak Djokovic’s chance at history it is Daniil Medvedev. The Russian has been imperious on hard courts and once again proved that in Toronto where he won the title including thrashing big servers like John Isner and Reilly Opelka. Despite his loss to Andrey Rublev in Cincinnati, Medvedev is the clear favourite to make the final and will hope a tough opening match won’t dent those hopes.
As for Richard Gasquet, he is starting to get back to his vintage form having been a runner-up at Umag is a couple of months ago and beat Dan Evans in Winston-Salem. Gasquet’s recent performances on quick hard courts means that he is no pushover for anyone and he will need to play at his very best if he wants to cause an early shock at the US Open.
There should be a couple of tight sets in this match and Medvedev won’t have it all his own way but the Russian should outlast the Frenchman as he will look to set an early marker ahead of his push for a first grand slam title.
Prediction: Medvedev in four sets.

After such a promising start at the Australian Open, it has been a turbulent season for Simona Halep with the Romanian having to miss both the French Open and Wimbledon with an achilles injury. Then the Romanian produced a high-quality opening match in her defeat to San Jose champion Danielle Collins before another injury saw her withdraw from Cincinnati. Can the Romanian regain her fitness in time for a grand slam that she’s had very little success in the past?
Halep will need to bring her best tennis on Monday as she plays Montreal champion Camila Giorgi. The big-serving and big-hitting Italian won the biggest title of her career in Canada by beating Karolina Pliskova. On her day she can beat anyone on the Women’s game as long as she can limit those unforced errors.
A big test awaits the Romanian and her counter-attacking tennis could expose Giorgi’s weaknesses. However given Halep’s physical condition mixed with Giorgi’s recent form than this could be a step too far for the 12th seed.
Prediction: Giorgi in three sets.
