Playing Styles & Prediction

There has been occasional glimpse of the force that Konta can be. Her run in Nottingham to the final was pivotal for her confidence – only for someone in her team to test positive for Covid, and then went on to contract the virus herself, struggling a lot with the symptoms.

She had a strong win over Elina Svitolina (her first) but had to withdraw with a knee injury. She looked commanding in the first set against Karolina Muchova but a rain delay and perhaps the effect of Covid took its toll. Konta subsequently pulled out of Cleveland.

Mladenovic’s best runs have been on clay this season, but she has been more consistent. She can thump a big ball and can even match Konta on serves when the Brit’s first serve is firing well.

Konta will have to get this done in two sets and will need a lot of first strike tennis.

Prediction: Konta in straight sets.
