Kyle Edmund v Pablo Andujar | Andujar leads H2H 1-0 (main draw only)
It has been an up and down year for the British No. 1 Kyle Edmund who has managed to hang on to his sport on the strength of some solid play in the US hard-court spring swing, but has been troubled with niggling injuries that have made his progress somewhat frustratingly limited.
He starts against Pablo Andujar, who denied him his first shot at an ATP World Tour title in Marrakech, before he finally got over the line in Antwerp. Since then though it has been a year of mixed fortunes. Hs coach Fredrik Rosengren retired and since then it has looked to have affected Edmund as his form as fluctuated, with niggling injuries exacerbating his stop-start progress this year.
His pattern has been solid looking wins and then losses, including two to the man of the hard-court so far, Daniil Medvedev.
Edmund is, on the whole, a little more consistent overall than Andujar, who is a long way off from his career best, just outside the Top 30. Edmund has stayed in the Top 30, and should come through this against a player who perhaps does feel more at home on the clay, indeed having opted for that strange clay court swing straight after Wimbledon.
