Dan Evans v Adrian Mannarino | First Meeting
It is a period of transition for the British No. 2 Dan Evans as he goes forward without coach David Feldgate, who helped him rise rapidly back up the rankings and most recently usurp Cameron Norrie as the British No. 2. Talking to BBC Sport, he admitted they had started to see things differently, and Davis Cup captain Leon Smith will be in his corner for as much as he can during this New York stint.
He lost to France’s Adrian Mannarino in their only encounter thus far, but he has reached the third round twice here, and with a little luck, he could do well here. There has never been any doubt about Evans’ talent – it had always been his ability to knuckle down and put the work in, but above all he is very much a player for the big stages.
Evans might not be the tallest chap on the court, but plays a very solid and aggressive game from the baseline, and moves very well, defending more than attacking but able to match that with a lot of variety and finesse.
Equally talented the Frenchman might have lacked a bit of consistency and motivation but he can at least match Evans in terms of variety and has a quick and intelligent tennis mind, to boot.
Coming into this match, Mannarino has perhaps a little more momentum while Evans looks to snap a here match losing streak and regain a little stability in his coaching set-up, at least while he is out in New York.
