Week Five of the UK Pro League took place at the National Tennis Centre. Harry Wendelken kicked the proceedings off on Court one on Monday. The Brit was up against Estonian Vladimir Ivanov in the first match on court. The first set saw both Wendelken & Ivanov stay close, however the Brit eventually managed to break serve and take the lead. The second set saw the Brit dominate as Ivanov struggled to hold serve. Wendelken took the match 6-3, 6-1.

Tuesday saw Wendelken against fellow Brit Jack Gibbens. The 25-year-old stayed with Wendelken at the start of the match, until the younger Brit managed to break serve to take the lead. The second set was again a show of domination by Wendelken who was hardly troubled by Gibbens. Wendelken had his second win of the week 6-4, 6-1.

In the quarter-final Wendelken was against Brandon Murphy. The 22-year-old was dominated by Wendelken in the first set and struggled to get into the match. However, in the second set Murphy fought hard and stayed with the 20-year-old for a while, before Wendelken went on to break to take the match 6-2, 6-3.

The semi-final saw Wendelken against George Houghton. The 20-year-old dominated the first set with Houghton struggling to hold serve. The second set however, was much closer. The 24 year old managed to work his way into the match and looked to be heading to a tiebreak. Wendelken though had other ideas and broke right at the end of the set to book a spot in the final 6-1, 7-5.

In the final Wendelken was against Max Basing. The teenager found Wendelken way too strong in the first set as the 20-year-old dominated and took the lead. However, in the second Basing found his game and stayed with Wendelken forcing a tiebreak. In the breaker the older Brit once again dominated and took the win and the week 5 title 6-1, 7-6(2).

Women’s event

Eliz Maloney was the last match on court one on Monday. The 22-year-old was up against Anna Popescu. Maloney dominated the match from start to finish. Popescu just could not stay with the younger Brit no matter what she tried. Maloney eased through the first match 6-2, 6-0.

On Tuesday Maloney was again the last match of the day, this time on court two. Maloney was against Summer Yardley. Maloney eased through the match as she dominated her compatriot from the outset. Yardley was outplayed and outclassed, as the more experienced Brit took the match losing only one game. Maloney had her second win of the week 6-0, 6-1.

In the quarter-final Maloney was against Estonian Elena Malygina. The Estonian actually got off to the better start, and managed to break the serve of the Brit to take the lead. The second set saw Maloney fight back, and secure the break of serve needed to level up the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak both players fought hard, not giving an inch. Eventually it was the Brit that got the vital break and moved into the semi-final 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.

The semi-final saw Maloney against Beth Grey in the last match of the day on Court one. The 27-year-old was struggling from the outset, and with Maloney way in the lead Grey was forced to retire from the match. The 22-year-old progressed to the final with the score at 5-0 (RET).

In the final Maloney was against Slovakian Katie Stresnakova. The Brit was on top form and continued from where she had left off in the previous round. Maloney dominated Stresnakova from the outset. No matter what the Slovakian tried, the Brit was equal to it. Maloney took the week five title in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
