Hamish Stewart made his debut at the UK Pro League. The 23 year old played his first match on Monday against Pole Felip Peliwo. The Pole got off to the better start, breaking Stewart. The Brit tried to fight back but was unable to get back on serve so Peliwo had the lead. The second set was much much closer. Stewart went toe to toe with Peliwo and forced a tiebreak. In the breaker the Brit edged ahead and levelled up the match. In the match tiebreak the Brit once again edged ahead and managed to hold on to claim the win 3-6, 6-7(5), 14-12.

On Tuesday Stewart was against another Brit in Michael Shaw. Both 23 year olds were going all out for the win. Stewart dominated though from the start. No matter what Shaw tried, Stewart was equal to. The debutant barely put a foot wrong as he sailed through the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

The quarter-final saw the Brit against Ivan Denisov. The 22 year old Russian was no match for Stewart in the first set. The Brit dominated from the start and lost only one game as Denisov struggled to hold serve. The Brit continued the form in the next set. Stewart broke early in the set and held on to take the match in straight sets again 6-1, 6-3.

In the semi-final Stewart was against Alexis Canter. The 24 year old stayed close to Stewart in the first set, but eventually the 23 year old was able to break serve and take the set. The second set was much easier for the debutant, as Canter was unable to hold serve. Stewart claimed the place in the final in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.

The final saw Stewart against George Houghton. The 24 year old got off to a flying start against Stewart and dominated the first set, taking the lead. Stewart then found his feet in the second set and dominated to level up the match. The final match tiebreak was evenly matched at the start. Eventually, though, Stewart earned the break needed and claimed the title on his debut week 1-6, 6-2, 10-6.

Ladies Event

Anna Brogan kicked off her week on Monday as the first match on court 2. The 25 year old was against Soumeya Anane. Brogan started well and broke Anane fairly early to take the first set. The second was much easier for Brogan, who broke at will to claim the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.

On Tuesday Brogan was the last match on court 1 and was against Annabelle Lammas. Brogan dominated this match from the outset, as Lammas struggled to stay with the more experienced player. Lammas did manage to hold serve a couple of times in the first set, before Brogan clicked up a gear. From there on Lammas could do nothing as Brogan took the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

The quarter-final saw Brogan against 18 year old Adeola Greatorex. The 25 year old outclassed her younger opponent, breaking at will to claim the first set. The second wasn’t any better for Greatorex who just couldn’t get into the game of Brogan. The 25 year old claimed a spot in the semi-final in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

In the semi-final Brogan was against Romanian Arina Vasilescu. The Brit started well and dominated the first set to take the lead. Vasilescu found her game in the second set, and forced a tiebreak. In the tiebreak the Romanian dominated to level up the match. The ensuing match tiebreak was very tight. The Romanian just edged through to book a spot in the final 2-6, 7-6(1), 13-11.

The third/fourth playoff match saw Brogan against Dutch player Michelle Dzjachangirova. The first set was close, as both players fought for the break, which eventually the Brit secured to take the lead. The second set saw Brogan dominate Dzjachangirova and claim third place 6-4, 6-1.
