Tennis | UK Pro League | Matusevich & Gillan claim titles in week 6

ALDERSHOT, UK – Anton Matusevich & Alice Gillan took the titles week 6 of the Pro League event. Gillan took her first title at the event, while Matsevich is the 2021 champion.

Anton Matusevich kicked off the week on the second day with a match against George Houghton. The 21 year old stayed close to Houghton in the first set, however, the 24 year old Houghton managed to break serve and took the lead. The second set was just as close, but this time it was the younger Brit that fought for the break and levelled up the match. The final set was a match tiebreak. At first both players went to and fro, before finally Matusevich secured the win 4-6, 7-5, 10-5.

On Tuesday Matusevich was against Jack Gibbens. The 21 year old dominated the first set and soon had the lead. Gibbens managed to stay with Matusevich in the second set. Eventually, though Matusevich managed to get the breakthrough needed and took the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

In the quarter-final Matusevich was against Ewan Moore. The pair went toe to toe in the first set and eventually a tie break ensued. The breaker was a very close affair, with neither getting the break to get ahead. Eventually, Matusevich secured the mini break and got the lead. The second set saw Moore and Matusevich stay close, but the 21 year old secured the break of serve and moved into the semi final 7-6(11), 6-4.

The semi-final saw Matusevich against Arthur Fery. The 2021 Champion and Fery went toe to toe before Matusevich finally managed to get the break of serve and move ahead. The second set saw the 21 year old dominate Fery and take the win to move into the final 7-6(11), 6-2.

In the final Matusevich was against Houghton again. This time however, the 21 year old had the better start and managed to break serve in the first set to take the lead. The second set saw the pair go toe to toe, before finally the 21 year old broke serve again to claim the title 6-3, 6-4.

Ladies Event

Alice Gillan started her campaign on Sunday. Gillan was against 17 year old Adeola Greatorex. The 24 year old easily secured the break of serve in the first set. Greatorex was unable to break back and the older player had the lead. The second set saw Gillan dominate and claim the win in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

On Monday Gillan took on Summer Yardley. The 22 year old was no match for Gillan who dominated from the outset. The 24 year old closed the day on court 2, and the match was all one way traffic. Gillan lost only one game in the entire match. No matter what Yardley threw at her, Gillan was equal to it. The older Brit went on to take the match 6-0, 6-1.

In the quarter-final Gillan took on Freya Davies. The pair went toe to toe in the first set, and forced a tiebreaker. In the breaker Gillan showed her experience and dominated the breaker to take the lead. The second set was dominated by the 24 year old who booked a semi-final spot in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-2.

The semi-final saw Gillan against Emma Wilson. The 24 year old managed to secure an early break of serve to take the lead. However, Wilson bounced back in the second set. After managing to break serve Wilson held on to level up the match. In the ensuing match tiebreak both Wilson & Gillan stayed close, before the 24 year old secured the mini break and held on for the win 6-3, 3-6, 10-6.

In the final Gillan was against Beth Grey. The Liverpudlian forced a tiebreak in the first set, which Gillan dominated to take the lead. Grey however fought back in the second set, dominating to level up the match. The match tiebreak was very very close, with neither player giving an inch. Eventually, Gillan got the mini break needed and took the title 7-6(3), 1-6, 10-8.

Arthur Fery defeated Aziz Kijametovic 6-4, 6-1 for third place.

Andre Lukosuite defeated Emma Wilson 6-3, 4-6, 10-12 for third place.

Danielle Daly defeated Freya Davies 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 for fifth place.

Ewan Moore defeated Brandon Murphy 6-1, 6-1 for fifth place.

Adeola Greatorex defeated Jada Okoye 6-3, 6-1 for seventh place.

Billy Blaydes defeated Oscar Weightman 3-0 (RET) for seventh place.
